Sausage
Hello, my name is Sausage. My animal id is #19182. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 25-Jan-2018.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Sausage is at risk for behavioral reasons. Sausage has been nervous and guarded in the care center, and at times displays defensive aggressive behavior. We are seeking placement only with a New Hope partner. Medically, we have no concerns for Sausage, who, other than for some mild otitis, presents as a healthy dog.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 50.125 lbs

Changed medical behavior from blue to orange due to pets response to being handled for medical diagnostics.
Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Sausage was sedated upon intake, behavior unknown
Date of intake:: 1/25/2018
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Other Notes:: When police entered the apartment Sausage was in, he was displaying what was described as defensive behavior. Additional details about the behaviors shown were not reported.
Date of assessment:: 1/30/2018
Summary:: Due to Sausage’s unknown history and discomfort with certain types of handling in the care center, we do not feel he is an appropriate candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: 1/26: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Sausage greets politely end engages in bouts of play.
Date of initial:: 1/26/2018
Summary:: Sausage was social and allowed handling until blood was drawn, he then snapped.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/29 Sausage has been observed to display inconsistent behavior in the shelter environment, alternating between loose/wiggly and lunging/snarling. He has appeared anxious and cautious in kennel as well. When handler approaches kennel, Sausage is immediately loose bodied, displaying no concern though when handler opens door Sausage begins snarling and snapping towards hand. Handler ceases engagement and returns within 20 minutes. Handler approaches kennel and Sausage is anxious, panting though accepts treats – he is leashed without issue and walked to a different kennel. Sausage appears to freeze at one moment though refocuses attention on treats and readily enters newer kennel.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Sausage came into the care center under distressing circumstances and has shown a range of behaviors when handled, from wiggly and social to rapid escalation and snapping. Due to the situation we do not feel that a full behavior assessment at this time is appropriate. We are recommending placement with a New Hope partner who can place him into an experienced, adult-only foster home and re-evaluate behavior after an acclimation and decompression period.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Sausage has escalated with certain types of touch and handling, and has shown signs of fear in certain situations. Our interactions with him have been limited and we have not performed a full behavior assessment at this time, so it is difficult to speak to a full range of potential challenges.
