GONE 12/21/17

Saturday

Hello, my name is Saturday. My animal id is #16238. I am a male white dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 16-Dec-2017.

Saturday is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). He has allowed minimal handling the care center, showing a very high level of stress in the care center. Overall Saturday has not acclimated to the shelter environment at all.

Summary:: Saturday displayed fearful behavior the kennel, low growling, and tense. He has allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Saturday is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (1):: Saturday was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 12/19: When off leash at the Care Center, Saturday displays a tucked tail and tense posture at the gate. He is uncomfortable with the female greeter’s face to face greet, and display s lip curls, and head whips when she moves away. He keeps to himself the rest of the session, briefly sniffing the other dog when she walks pass.

Date of intake:: 12/16/2017

Summary:: Tense; when approached by counselor, Saturday hard stared and growled

Date of initial:: 12/16/2017

Summary:: Tense, growling, lunging; alligator roll

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Saturday so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Saturday displayed low energy and movement throughout his stay in the care center. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope Partner: Saturday has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Saturday has been observed to become uncomfortable with handling at times (tense, growling, and, backing away especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give Saturday the option to walk away from any social interaction. Saturday should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Saturday’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Saturday may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression:Reactivity towards other humans was observed in the care center (tense, growling, head flipping). Because this appears to present a challenge outside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed.
