07/09/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/09/17 21:30 Basic Information: Sassy is a 1yr old female large dog who was gotten here from ACC and was kept in the same home for about a month. Unfortunately due to Sassy biting another dog she could not be kept anymore. Sassy had an injury on her head and left cheek and was last taken to the vet about 3 weeks ago for a checkup. Socialization: Around strangers and children Sassy is known as friendly/outgoing, relaxed and respectful and plays very gentle with both adults and children. She has been socialized with one dog and with him she was calm and respectful. However; with other dogs she will growl and lunge at them. She has also been socialized with a snake and she was very curious of him but was also very respectful. She has never been socialized with cats. She also has a record of biting another animal and a person as well. Behavior: Sassy is a dog who will attempt to run out of her home if the door is open and she hears another dog barking, she isn’t bothered by loud noises or fireworks, having her food, treats or toys touched while she is eating, being held or restrained, being given a bath or if someone unfamiliar approaches her owner of home. She has never gotten her nails trimmened. For a New Family to Know: Sassy is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, independent and excitable. She has a medium activity level, loves to play with Kongs, enjoys playing fetch and tug and has been kept indoors only, She prefers to sleep on a blanket of the floor, ate 2cups of Purina dry food 2x a day, is consired house-trained, will only have an accident if she isn’t taken outside, is well-behaved when left at home alone, does well in a crate overnight, likes to fo outside at least 4x a day, knows the commands sit, stay and come, pulls lightly on leash and off leash she will wander but come when she is called. She does chase of squirrels and birds when she sees them as well. Intake: Upon intake Sassy allowed all handling, being collared and having her picture taken.
05/31/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A chunky gal with a big heart and a ton of happy-go-lucky energy, Sassafras is Sassy with a capital S, and I’m loving it! Time really does fly when you’re having fun, and our first date together was a blur of hefty hugs, goofy games and surprisingly good leash manners as we strolled sedately through the park, then got into a friendly yet competitive wrestling match over a stick we found along the way. Sassy arrived at the Care Center alone but someone clearly loved her, fed her (heartily!) and taught her all the basics of good doggie etiquette in her former home. She comes and sits on command, takes treats softly and seems to be quite house trained too, not to mention her stellar leash walking technique and generosity in sharing toys…once she’s had a good chew on them, of course! Always keen to meet fellow dogs of any size, Sassy wags a happy tail whenever she spots one, and pulls to greet them like a long-lost friend. She shows no inclination for chasing the squirrels and pigeons who cross our path, and when a Dad and his toddler in a stroller wheel past us, it’s big smiles all round. Is there no one this gorgeous pup can’t charm? It seems the only thing Sassy doesn’t enjoy is being tethered for our photo shoot, and she soon tells me off the only way she knows how–with a punishing dose of corporal cuddling! Sassafras is more than ready to join a new forever family, so visit our Manhattan Care Center today and ask for her by name. Then get ready to go big AND go home…with the sassy new love of your life!

ENERGY LEVEL: Sassy’s previous owner described her as having a medium level of activity. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No young children (under 5): Due to Sassy’s high level of activity and jumping up, we recommend a home without young children. _X_Single-pet home _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Sassy’s multiple bite history, to a dog and to the owner while breaking up the dog fight, the behavior department recommends Sassy be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced foster home without other dogs. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Sassy is reported to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. This behavior has also been observed at the care center. Sassy may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
05/30/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sassafras is polite when interacting with dogs in the care center and engages in bouts of bouncy play. The behavior department feels that Sassafras may potentially be placed into a home with other social or tolerant dogs, based on these observations. Due to arriving as a stray, in home behavior with dogs is unknown. 5/30: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Sassafras solicits and engages in bouncy, running play. 5/31: Sassafras engages in bouncy running play with male and female dogs. She offers correction for mounting.
