Sarge has no known health problems are injuries; he however has old scars on his neck and shoulder from when he tried to get out of the fenced in gate around the home. He has not seen a vet recently. Socialization: Around strangers Sarge is friendly and respectful, but has known to bark and growl when company or if individuals come to the house making a lot of noise (being too loud). He has lived with children ages 0-1 years old; he is respectful, and relaxed around them. When playing with adults Sarge is gentle and rough plays; with children he is gentle. Sarge has no living history with cats, his owner states that Sarge dislikes cats, and will lunge and bark when one is in his sight. Sarge has only had living experience with other dogs when he was a puppy. He has no bite history. Behavior: Sarge isn’t bothered during storms/fireworks, if food bowl is touched, treat or toy taken away. If being pushed or pulled off furniturehe isn’t bothered, sarge isn’t bothered if being held/restrained, being bathed, or if disturbed while sleeping, having his coat brushed. Sarge has only had his nails trimmed by the groomer, when someone unfamiliar comes to the house Sarge will bark. For a New Family to Know: Sarges’ family would describe him as friendly, affectionate, quiet, and confident. He has a very high activity level and when home he likes to follow you around. Sarge likes to play with balls and his favorite game is tug. He is kept mostly indoors and sleeps in his crate or besides his owner’s bed. Sarge eats dry food twice a day; his favorite treats are pork/beef strips. He is housetrained and crate trained, when outside he will potty on the grass/cement; when left alone in the home he barks/whines. Sarge is crate trained and does well for 6-8 hours a day, he knows commands such as; sit, stay, down, and come. For exercise Sarge is used to brisk walks, on leash he pulls very hard if he sees a cat or squirrel; when off leash Sarge will wonder but will come when his name is called. During intake: Sarge had a very loose body allowed all handling.
07/16/2017 WEB MEMO
A staff member writes: Sarge is an affectionate and friendly dog who is always happy to see me when I come to visit his kennel. His ears perk up and his tail wags excitedly. He leans in to my petting and enjoys our time together out in the play yard. He goes crazy when I present a ball and engage in a tug of war with a rope toy. Sarge is looking for his forever home with someone who has the time to play with him, and he will give you all the love in return. A volunteer writes: Sarge might be the Guernsey cow/bat hybrid you’ve been waiting for! He’s rather petite, but big on sweetness and super fun. He’s been easy to handle on leash, is usually quiet in his cage, and seems housebroken. He’s a pro at “sit” and “down” and does them immediately, even if the treats I have on hand aren’t to his liking. He gets very excited about toys, and his love for them is matched by his love for LOVE! He might be at the high end of the lap dog size spectrum, but insists he is a lap dog nonetheless, and he is so cuddly you’ll agree! Plus, he’s reported to be crate-trained, and has previously lived harmoniously with an infant…what a guy! He would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!

ENERGY LEVEL: Sarge is reported to have a high activity level in a home environment; He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) _X_No cats: Owner reports lunging at cats _x_ No Dog Parks: Due to Sarge’s tendency to display conflicting body language, the Behavior Department recommends that he only be socialized in a more controlled setting. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Sarge appears to become mouthy when over stimulated. Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys
