06/24/17 11:34 Basic Information: Sarah is a 1 year old female, brindle and white dog who was homebred inside the previous owner’s home. His previous owner surrendered her due to too many animals inside the home. She has never been to the vet but she is reported to have no medical issues. Socialization: Sarah is a slightly skittish dog and tends to appear fearful around strangers; she cowers her back and tucks her tail between her legs. She lived with her parents and siblings; there were 5 other dogs in the home of various ages. She is very playful with all the other dogs and very excited. She also lived with children ages 9 and 12, and was very respectful around them. When playing with adults she is very gentle and calm. She has never bitten another animal or human before. Behavior: Sarah is partially house trained but still pees indoors about twice a week. Once left alone she will whine. Once loose in the house and left alone if something is on a shelf or kitchen counter top she’ll want to take it down and chew it. When she hears loud noises like fireworks or thunder she would hide under her mother. She’s not very vocal when it comes to barking, when someone approaches her in the yard she won’t bark too much. She isn’t bothered by people touching her or her food or bones while eating, when you do she’ll just stop and look at you. She doesn’t mind bathes but she still tries to jump out. For a New Family to Know She has a medium to high energy and loves to play tug and play with her stuffed toys. When you’re home she follows you around from each room. She is crate trained but can only be comfortable in it for about 4 hours otherwise she’ll start to whine for the bathroom. She knows basic commands like sit, down, come: “let’s go” and “go home” when she needs to go in the crate. She pulls very lightly on the leash and her favorite treat is peanut butter. Behavior Upon Intake: Sarah had a very tense body and big eyes. She let me pet her and collar her but continued to hide behind owner. She paced back and forth staying very low to the ground.

A volunteer writes: Beautiful Sarah is the fifth dog from the same household being relinquished into our care as their owner had too many pets. Bubba, Sunshine, Butterbiscuit have already exited our facility. We are right now left with Sarah and sweet Dolla. Like her housemates (siblings and parents), Sarah is very shy. Sarah has the most gorgeous eyes and appears to have been outstandingly cared for. She is a good girl and accepts my leash. Her tail comes from under her belly with a walk around the block. She is very handshy but welcomes my treats and the ones from a staff. She accepts my caresses after a long while spent together. We are told that Sarah is naturally very shy toward strangers or unfamiliar situations and often seeks comfort from…her own mom. She did live with a number of children and many dogs, and is said to be a very good and sweet girl. Gorgeous and precious Sarah needs a new home to call her own and a human to love. Will you be the one opening your heart to this very special girl? Sarah is at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer writes: The name Sarah means Princess, and our little Princess is a bit confused at the sudden turn around in her life, but she’s rallying! Quiet in her kennel but ready to be leashed for a walk, she’s shy, sweet, gentle and easy. Sarah was surrendered due to too many pets (5) with whom she played nicely, lived respectfully with children, loves to play tug, is housetrained when walked regularly, is afraid of loud noises like thunder, and doesn’t guard her stuff. Princess Sarah is a beauty in her brindle coat and soft hazel eyes. She takes treats gently, is lovely on leash, ignored dogs we passed in the park and doesn’t seem to be bothered by city and park mayhem. Sarah is looking for a quiet home with patient people who understand she’ll need a bit of time to be comfortable and feel safe, secure and loved. KNOWN HISTORY: 6/24/17 Spayed, Owner Surrender (In previous home for one year) Previously lived with: Adults, children (ages nine-twelve), and five other dogs Behavior toward strangers: Fearful Behavior toward children: Respectful Behavior toward dogs: Playful and excited Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Sarah is described as having a medium level of activity. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/28/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is crouching. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Sarah appeared very fearful in the assessment room, having a tense body and tucked tail. She remained aloof throughout the assessment but allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Sarah had a very tense body. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/24/17 During her initial medical exam, Sarah was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Sarah’s previous owner described her as having a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Sarah may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. Older, gentle children should have an interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Sarah has displayed fearful behavior at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Sarah the option to walk away from any social interaction. Sarah should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Sarah’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Sarah would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
