06/14/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A petite pixie with oversized ears and a penchant for bouncing around like a kangaroo, little Sarah couldn’t be more adorable if she tried! She flits from one side of the yard to the other so it’s almost impossible to capture her beauty on film, but she does sit briefly for treats, and once all tuckered out she’s happy to settle quietly at my feet (or on my lap) for snuggles and sweet talk. You won’t find a more fun companion to share in a game of follow the leader, or a more affectionate sidekick for chilling out on the couch. At only 1 year old, Sarah still has a lifetime of love to share. While she’s a social butterfly with us humans, Sarah can get a little anxious when it comes to meeting other dogs, but her heart is firmly in the right place. Even when her anxiety gets the better of her, she’s all bark and tail wags, not a growl to be heard. Our dedicated behavior team has slowly introduced her to the concept of playing with another pup and now, after 3 dates with resident hunk Tony, Sarah totally ‘gets it’ and happily runs rings around her new boyfriend. While she’ll need guidance and patience with future doggie introductions, this bright wee miss has proven she’s got what it takes to learn and thrive in a new home, if only someone gives her the chance. Will you be that special someone? Sunny Sarah is waiting at our Manhattan Care Center and she’s ready to go home today!
06/11/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 6/8/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/11/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Summary: Sarah displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment. She appeared uncomfortable when her paw was handled and quickly moved away. PLAYGROUP: Sarah has displayed initial concern during interaction with dogs in the care center. With careful management and introductions to select helper dogs, Sarah has begun to display highly playful behaviors with other playful dogs. The behavior department recommends that initial follow up with other dogs outside the care center be conducted at a slow pace, to polite, tolerant dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 6/8/17 Upon intake, Sarah was active and social. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/9/17 During her initial medical exam, Sarah was tense and backing away. She barked and lunged at people entering the space but was social towards handlers. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Sarah so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to Sarah’s sensitivity with her paws being handled, we recommend a home without young children. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Sarah became uncomfortable and moved quickly away when her paw was handled, showing discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Sarah’s paws at this time and to go slow when touching her in other areas as we do not know where she may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Sarah to be more comfortable with this. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Sarah has been observed to react to other dogs and human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, barking, and growling. Sarah may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
