09/18/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/18/17 11:56 Previous owner was told that the dog was fully trained and was extremely friendly with dogs but once they got her they realized the dog was very reactive to other dogs and would bark and whine excessively when she saw dogs and has extreme anxiety and was not easy to handle. They stated that she ate purina dog chow and was very excite dwhen hearing noises outside in the hallway. She would start barking at door. Upon intake, Sapphire was reactive to other dogs that came into shelter and would bark and whine and pull on leash to get towards them. She barked excessively to noises she heard in the lobby. Client put leash and collar on dog. Limited handling.

09/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 9/18/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for two days) Behavior toward dogs: Reactive, barks and whines at them SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/21/17 Summary: Sapphire has been difficult to handle at the care center, growling when touched. She appears fearful in her surroundings and has not acclimated to her care takers, allowing only very minimal handling. In the kennel, she growls at people and dogs that approach. Out of concern for her stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Sapphire is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: 9/19: Sapphire is unable to be collared for off leash introduction (flinches away from handler, hard barks). When introduced on leash, Sapphire displays a bit of a tense body, high tail, ears erect, begins to whine. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Sapphire was barking at dogs and noises. Limited handling was conducted. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/18/17 During her initial medical exam, Sapphire growled but allowed the exam. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Sapphire so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Sapphire is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Sapphire has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Sapphire gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Sapphire, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Sapphire to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center and in her previous home, Sapphire has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Sapphire may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
09/19/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
9/19: Sapphire is unable to be collared for off leash introduction (flinces away from handler, hard barks).
