Came in calm but was nervous during the intake
12/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When we think “puppy”, we see cuteness, big puzzled eyes ready to discover the world, a plump and buzzy little body, a round belly and a big ribbon around her neck. Our little Sanza is only 7 months old and right now, she does not quite fit this rosy picture…True, she is pretty as can be but her eyes are a bit sad and wary. She could have a little more meat around the bones…She is not bouncy and prefers the arms of her caretaker to protect her from all her fears…We believe in her, though and we spayed her already as we know, we really know that in loving hands, a star soon will be born, ready to meet the world, people and her peers, joyous, lively and healthy as a puppy should be. So, come and meet her soon. Sanza is ready to go home with you as she is already spayed. She will need a gentle hand at first and a teacher to show her that life as a pet can be a fun and happy one…Sanza is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.

KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is crouching. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Sanza was fearful throughout her assessment but allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Tolerant: These dogs are typically non-reactive on leash and will be either friendly or indifferent off leash. They can typically tolerate some rude behavior from other dogs and can be described as having a long fuse. They show relaxed, appropriate, easy-going body language around others. PLAYGROUP: Sanza engages in soft play with other dogs in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Sanza and social, respectful resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/22/16 During her initial medical exam Sanza appeared tense and fearful but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopters, older children or adult-only home _X_No young children (under 5): Sanza has been timid with new people she meets in the care center, though she shows good coping skills and makes appropriate movements when she is uncomfortable (turning her head, moving away, lowering her body – rather than escalating to warning behaviors). However, we feel that very young children may be intimidating to Sanza. Experienced adopters with young children can be considered pending interaction.
