Santiago is an affectionate, mischievous little rogue and in between kisses you’ll find him leaping up for treats and stealing bandannas from pockets–this skinny sweetheart has more bounciness per pound than Tigger himself! Of course, when he flashes that signature grin all shenanigans are instantly forgiven and it’s time to invite him onto my lap for a full-on snuggle session and boy, does he love to snuggle! Santiago’s clearly not been living the high life and I can count every rib on his lanky body, yet when I offer treats he licks them gently from my hand and for all his rough’n’tumble playfulness, he’s a sweet marshmallow of a dog at heart. He loves to hold and tug on toys and enjoys spending time with the other pups in playgroup too, wiggling his happy butt and wagging a tail already wounded at its tip from constantly swinging against the wall of his kennel. This guy is Friendly with a capital F! Found as a stray, Santiago literally ran right up to a stranger in the park and during his behavior evaluation–which naturally, he aced–he even jumped up to give the assessor some kisses. Sure, he may need a brush up on basics like ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and how to walk on a leash but what he lacks in social graces he more than makes up for with love, love and more love. BEHAVIOR:

Santiago came into our center after he ran up to a member of the public while in the park. He was friendly upon intake, loose body, wagging tail, hyper but allowed all handling. He was very social and friendly during his initial medical exam. Santiago pulled on leash during his relief walk. He was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. Santiago jumped up affectionately to lick assessor’s face during Look item. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, sniffs assessor’s hand, tail wag. Santiago followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit distracted, settled easily at end. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licks assessor’s hand. Santiago playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose, wiggly body. When off leash with other dogs, Santiago greets with aroused body language, and then displays persistently sexually motivated behavior. The Behavior Team feels Santiago would do well with an Average adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners.
Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, tail wag
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, a bit distracted, settles easily at end
Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks hand
Toy 1: 1. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Santiago greets with aroused body language, then displays persistantly sexually motivated behavior.
5/31 update:  Santiago is a bit sexually motivated- however he does engage in play at times.
