12/16/16 16:59 Snow A1099742 is an adult female APBT mix who was brought to ACC by police with another dog, White A1099743. The dogs were left with a family member 2 weeks ago. The family member was unable to care for them. They stayed in crates and she fed them in the crates. They barked at police when they arrived but were tolerant while another family member put them in the police officers’ crates.
01/02/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Like a refined young lady, she was very engaged as I approached her kennel. She remained calm and still as I leashed her. Doing her business promptly once we got outside. She seems extremely house trained, as I think that was her first walk today and her kennel was clean. Pretty amazing! She loves affection too. She’s a winner!” Another volunteer writes: Five year old Sandy Cheeks and most likely son, gorgeous Patrick Star, came to us, crated, on a cold winter night. Life must have been harsh and food scarce as both pooches are rather thin and in need of TLC. Sandy appears to have fed many litters and I bet that young Patrick Star was part of her last brood. Just put them next to each other and you will see what I am talking about. Sandy is a bit of a toughy …She likes things to be done ..her way. She does come when called, though, sits when asked and absolutely loves treats. Well, she has quite a bit of weight to catch up with. She pulls moderately on the leash, likes to sniff her premises and does her business on the way. Sandy knows her manners around people. She is smart or maybe, savvy.. She can appreciate goodness and her eyes soften so much when she hears a gentle voice and feels the stroke of a hand on her head and body. In playgroups with her peers, she enjoys herself bouncing with males as long as they respect her boundaries. She does bark at dogs that do not appear to be her cup of tea or threatening to her. Just remember, although we do not know Sandy Cheeks past that she had until now, perhaps she had to kind of fend a bit for herself…Although Sandy Cheeks is already 5, it is not too late for her to lose her rugged edges and acquire smoother manners. A safe haven, a daily meal, maybe some treats and toys, a home sweet home and the love of an experienced master….Those are Sandy Cheeks wishes and ours too… Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Be her new master and teacher! A volunteer updates: Sandy Cheeks has really grown on me… She is one of the most affectionate and needy gals I ever met at the care center. A quintessential bench girl who would just spend her time on my lap getting and giving kisses. Sandy C had a rough life but her heart is soft and just beating and yearning for love. Will you give her a chance?
12/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Sandy Cheeks displayed no behavioral concerns on her assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Sandy Cheeks has been selective while interacting with other dogs in the care center. She has displayed interest in play with select male and female dogs, although at times may appear tense and assertive with others. It is recommended that these observations are taken into consideration before immediately placing Sandy Cheeks into a home with other dogs. Sandy Cheeks would benefit from slow, monitored introducitons to respectful, toelrant dogs on a one-on-one basis.. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/14/16 During her initial exam, Sandy Cheeks appeared to be nervous, she growled and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach her to control impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration (During her stay at the care centers, Sandy Cheeks has displayed a low threshold for frustration on leash and will attempt to bark/growl at passerby humans/dogs. Sandy Cheeks is easily refocused as she is highly food motivated and does best upon a slow approach when meeting unfamiliar people. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing her to new situations so that she is set up for success.)
