Sammy
Hello, my name is Sammy. My animal id is #16763. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 22-Dec-2017.
Sammy is at risk for behavioral reasons. Sammy is difficult to remove from the kennel, grabbing the leash in his mouth and not releasing it. Once out of his kennel, he appears to be social with the person handling him, but hard barks and growls at anyone else who approaches and does not allow handling from them. For these reasons, we seek placement only with a New Hope partner. Medically, Sammy is underweight and shows some signs of past mistreatment, but appears to be otherwise healthy.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Date of intake:: 12/22/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 12/26/2017
Summary:: Sammy is difficult to remove from the kennel, grabbing the leash in his mouth and not releasing it. Once out of his kennel, he appears to be social with the person handling him, but hard barks and growls at anyone else who approaches and does not allow handling from them. For these reasons, Sammy is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Date of initial:: 12/23/2017
Summary:: Sammy was barking and growling.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sammy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Sammy has been difficult to leash in his kennel, but when leashed using distractions, he has come out of his kennel on his own. When outside, he is soft and wiggly, and has accepted petting from the person handling him, but shows some reactivity towards on-lookers.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Sammy is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Sammyy has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed handling only from select handlers. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Sammy barks and growls at people who approach his kennel and at people who approach him when out of his kennel. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Sammy to new and unfamiliar situations.
