04/11/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 04/09/17 Intact male, owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly, outgoing Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Friendly Behavior toward cats: None reported Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Affectionate, playful and friendly with a high activity level. Other notes: Sammi will snap and growl if someone tries to pick him up SAFER ASSESSMENT: 04/11/17 Summary: Sammi has remained difficult to manage in the care centers, out of concern for his stress level a SAFER assessment will not be conducted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Sammi’s previous guardian reported that he has lived with another small dog and was friendly and playful with her. When off leash at the Care Center, Sammi greets other small male and female dogs but mostly keeps to himself, exploring the pen. He is tolerant of another male mounting him and offered an appropriate correction- head whip and bark. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 04/09/17 During his initial medical examination, Sammi was tense and allowed minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Sammi has displayed a low energy level in the care centers as he remains fairly shut down; previous owner reports high activity level in home environment. We recommend providing daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet to direct his energy.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Sammi has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Sammi has growled and snapped when being picked up, showing an uncomfortability with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid holding Sammi at this time and being cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Sammi to be more comfortable with this. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Sammi has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because he is so uncomfortable, Sammi does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to bite upon direct contact.
