07/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Your dog is gorgeous”, a passerby said to me, and I so wish I could simply say thank you and move on. Instead, I list Sammi’s outstanding attributes as she’s in need of a home. Sammi is not just a pretty face I tell this stranger, she’s playful, affectionate, sweet, knows how to sit for treats, takes them gently (in small pieces thank you very much!), has the perfect amount of puppy energy and never stops smiling! Sammi was surrendered to our care as her former owner has some personal problems, and tells us that Sammi lived with a 2 year old and is playful, loved to play with dogs in the dog park but can get too rough for the “littles”, doesn’t guard her things and is friendly to all. I loved my time with Sammi, she loves toys, sat right away, her markings are stunning, she’s been well taken care of, went potty as soon as we were out the door, and is simply everything a puppy should be. In her first playgroup she was playful and solicitous, bowing to other dogs in invitation. Sammi’s wish list includes lots of toys and balls as she loves to play and can amuse herself, a canine sibling would be nice or play dates with others, and an affectionate and loving human or two or three. She’s a terrific dog ready to find her new family.
07/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sammi lived previously with a 2-year-old, around whom she was playful. She is reported to be playful with other dogs at the dog park, though she may be rough with small breed dogs. Sammi is described as playful, excitable, and friendly, with a high activity level. Sammi has been social and easy to handle since intake. She allowed SAFER handling items and engaged with the toy, settling with a loose body. With other dogs in playgroup, Sammi is exuberant and highly playful, though she may overwhelm dogs with calmer, gentler play styles. During Tag, Sammi joined in and began jumping up and she grabbed at the assessor’s forearm with moderate pressure. She calmed quickly when the assessor stopped, and through careful leash handling was able to deescalate quickly, but she did show a low threshold for arousal and a willingness to bite at clothing and human limbs. Sammi demonstrates behavior typical of a young, active dog. She will need daily mental and physical exercise to appropriately direct her high energy. She will also need guidance to learn how to appropriately interact with humans (no teeth on human skin). We saw no concerns about human-directed aggression on the SAFER but she may be overly enthusiastic with her play (with both humans and other dogs) so we recommend an experienced adopter who can provide her with that reward-based guidance, and who is familiar with dog body language to safely manage when she may become overstimulated. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Sammi engages in exuberant play with males and females. She continues to solicit from a dog who begins to become overwhelmed by her style of play.
