GONE 11/04/17

Sambo

Hello, my name is Sambo. My animal id is #10676. I am a male black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 24-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive to other animals.

[DVM Intake] DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: approx. 2-4 years Microchip noted on Intake? No History : Presents as owner surrender. DOH- bite history. Resents physical examination with muzzle. Subjective: Evidence of Cruelty seen – No Evidence of Trauma seen – No Objective P = 96 R = 30 BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, heavy brown waxy exudate AU , no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Unable to evaluate due to muzzle PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Intact male- 2 descended symmetrical testicles MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat, approx. 3 mm abrasion under right eye CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment Otitis externa Abrasion Prognosis: Excellent Plan: Cleaned ears and claro applied Monitor abrasion under right eye- no medications necessary at this time SURGERY: Okay for surgery

No c/s/v/d noted EENT: No nasal or ocular d/c L: coughing, eupneic A: CIRDC Otitis externa Abrasion under right eye-resolved P: CTM as needed while at BACC Move to iso Start doxycycline 10mg/kg PO SID x14d until 11/15 Recheck day 7, 10 Excellent prognosis

Upon intake. Sambo was placed into the truck by the owner. sambo was NOT scanned or photographed due to his behavior during intake.

Basic Information:: Sambo is a 3 year old Male large Dog that was surrendered due to a altercation with another dog. Sambo has never suffered any health issues or injuries. Sambo’s last visit to the vet was in 2015 for a round of shots.

Previously lived with:: 2 adults, 2 dogs

How is this dog around strangers?: Around stranger sambo is relaxed and inviting. Sambo does approach unknown people when they enter the home.If a stranger attempts to rub Sambo he will lower his head to proceed with the rubbing.

How is this dog around children?: sambo has never been around children so it is unknown how he will react to being around them.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Sambo has lived in a home with 2 other dogs. Client explained that the dogs were related and lived in the same home for a while. Sambo is usually respectful and tolerant with the other dogs in the home. The previous owner stated that Sambo inst friendly with small dogs. whenever hes noticed a small dog he will bark and growl in the direction of the animal.

How is this dog around cats?: No known experience with cats however when he spots the stray cats from the window he does bark in their direction.

Resource guarding:: Sambo isn’t bothered if the previous owner attempted to touch or take away his food bowl. he isn’t bothered if you remove a toys or household item from his mouth. he will instantly drop it once told. no known issues with resource guarding.

Bite history:: Sambo did bite another dog inside of the home on sunday 10/22/17. Sambo was placed on a DOH Hold.

Housetrained:: Yes

Energy level/descriptors:: Medium – High

Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: No

For a New Family to Know: Sambo was described friendly and independent. Sambo was kept indoor and outdoor. Sambo was feed both wet and dry food separately and mixed together. Sambo has a medium -high activity level inside the home. Sambo enjoys chewing on tennis balls as a hobby.

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Owner surrender

Previously lived with:: 2 adults and 2 dogs

Behavior toward strangers:: Relaxing and inviting

Behavior toward dogs:: Tolerant, but isn’t friendly towards small dogs

Bite history:: Yes, Owner stated Sambo became aroused (barking and growling) when he heard one of the other two dogs barking at the neighbor. Sambo directed his frustration onto the injured dog biting and scratching at his face.

Housetrained:: Yes

Energy level/descriptors:: Sambo displays a medium to high activity level in the household.

Date of assessment:: 11/3/2017

Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.

Tag:: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends (may need coaxing to approach). Dog is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.

Paw squeeze 1:: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff.

Flank squeeze 1:: 1. Dog does not respond at all.

Flank squeeze 2:: 1. Dog does not respond at all.

Toy:: 1. No interest.

Summary:: Sambo came into the room calm but very distracted sniffing the floor. He showed no interest towards the handlers.

Summary:: No handling was done due to his behavior.

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: New Hope Partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, as well as Sambo’s bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address the biting and underlying anxiety.
