07/19/16 10:12 Samantha interacts well with strangers and children. She has not been in a home with children but when she is in situations where she has to interact with them she is gentle and playful. She has never been in a home with other dogs, however she is well behaved with unknown dogs. She just smells themwith a loose and wiggly body. Samantha is completely house trained and holds her bowel movements until walked. She is well behaved when left home alone. She does not mind having her food, toys or treats touched or taken from her. She Doesn’t like getting baths but doesn’t mind other forms of grooming. She has a medium activity level at home, her favorite toy is a basketball. She gets walked two to three times a day. She knows Sit and Come. Samantha is fed wet and dry food along with human food. She is allowed to run off leash at the park and she will come back when called. Samantha entered the shelter calm and curious. She was jumping onto the desk and sniffing around. Samantha allowed herself to be collared but was resistant when try to handle for medical but only tries to run away.
07/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ole’ Blue Eyes (Frank) has nothing on our girl – just look at those gorgeous eyes…..the color of a cloudless sky on a soft summer day. Beautiful! Her gleaming caramel coat is gorgeous, she’s well fed, good on leash, housetrained and only with us due to NYCHA restrictions. We’re told that while she hasn’t lived with children she’s interacted with them gently and playfully, she does OK with calm dogs as she gets overwhelmed with active dogs, she interacted well with the cat in the home who was used to her, is housetrained, well behaved when left home alone, and her favorite toy is a basketball. Sam sits as soon as she sees my hand go into my treat bag, is easy and gentle and the perfect way to end my shift. When our time together was over she hopped right back into her kennel, drank some water and lay down to rest, wagging her tail goodbye. Gentle and easy, Sam is looking for a new family to love. Will you be the lucky one to adopt her?
07/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Samantha is reported to be gentle and playful with children, and to interact well with strangers. She did not live with other dogs and could be selective. She has been easy to handle since intake. With the behavior assessor, Samantha was social and interactive but was trembling at the start of the assessment. She allowed all handling items without issue, and did not engage with the toy. Samantha has shown a tendency to become aroused when around some other dogs, especially while walking on the street. In playgroup she has been uncomfortable and has given back-off signals including growling. We recommend experienced adopters for Samantha, who can safely manage her around other dogs and who can work to build positive experiences. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. No interest.
07/13/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Samantha hasn ot yet been comfortable during off leash introduction to other dogs. The previous owner cites “She has never been in a home with other dogs but when she interacts with strange dogs in the park she has a limit to which she tolerates them and then will fight if she feels over stimulated.”. We are not sure how Samantha’s observed behaviors around dogs would translate into a home environment. Due to her apparent discomfort around unfamiliar dogs in a new environment, the behavior team feels she would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in her new home. 7/13: When off leash with other dogs, Samantha is tense and appears highly uncomofortable when approached. 7/14: Samantha is tense when entering the pen. She jumps on the helper dog and begins to growl while maintaining the same tense body.
