SAFE 10/21/17
Hello, my name is Sam. My animal id is #9527. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 12-Oct-2017.
Sam 9527 is at risk for a respiratory illness (CIRDC). Behaviorally, Sam has allowed handling and petting with a slow approach, though he may be timid in new environments. We recommend an experienced adopter prepared to help build Sam’s confidence through positive experiences. Note also that Sam is possibly deaf.
A Little Bit About Me
A volunteer writes: What’s sweet as sugar, white as snow, and soft as a pile of feathers? 2 year-old Sam may technically be classified as deaf but what he lacks in hearing he wholly makes up for in character, charm, and in heart. “Everyone absolutely LOVES him.” Less than 24 hours after arriving at the shelter and Sam already has legions of fan. “He is so incredibly gorgeous.” And how that would be an understatement. If you weren’t wow’d by Sam’s majestic, 52 pound frame, or blown over by that aforementioned snowy white coat, then wait until you spy with your little eye his crystal blue sapphires for peepers. But while Sam’s coat may blend in with the coldest of climates and his eyes shine that bright icy blue, Sam himself could not be warmer. The moment he finds his bearings, sorts his surroundings, and knows who to call “friend” he is content to snuggle in, climb up into your lap, tossing those snowy paws across your knees. Because of Sam’s hearing impairment he would do best with a calm, patient, and experienced owner, one with a slow approach who can make this quiet stunner feel confident and secure. What’s sweet as sugar, white as snow, and soft as a pile of feathers? Your new lifelong best friend. Sam is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

Date of initial:: 10/12/2017
Summary:: Sam was tense and low, he snapped when he was muzzled.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sam so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Sam displays a medium level of energy. He will benefit from daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Sam may be timid in new environments, though this may be due to his hearing impairment and being unsure of his surroundings. Once comfortable, he is social and wiggly. Sam should never be forced to submit to petting or handling when he is showing signs of discomfort, will thrive on gentle coaxing and reassurance. Sam would do best with a slow introduction, preferably with treats.
