02/14/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sally waits right at her door, her eyes on every person who passes by and passes her over…. She so much wants company, and enjoy freedom… Sally was left with us, together with housemate Spot as their owner became too ill to care for them. A relative did not have much to say about her but..”She is easy to handle”. Sally lived with 2 other large dogs, one of them being Spot and a myriad of cats. She is dressed in a rich chocolate coat distressed by lots of missing hair toward her back..May be allergies? She seems to be in heat , is on the thin side and has seen so many litters…. She is all happy when she sees the leash..She is a great walker, seems very much house trained , loves treats that she takes very politely from my hand and sits beautifully on command. Sally likes the attention too, caresses and gentle talks… She looks very much like a loyal dog. I did not try the ball with her like I did with Spot. May be she can play too? Sally, at least at the care center, severed from her natural surroundings and being in heat, does not show much like for other dogs, big and small… We do not know anything about her past and her real temperament, likes and dislikes are difficult to affirm…She did live for quite a while with many other pets…Still, this sweet middle aged gal (who has contributed unwillingly more than her share to the canine overpopulation) deserves rest, care and love as a cherished pet and single dog. Sally is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to rest her paw in your hand..
02/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sally came into our center after her owner was hospitalized. It is reported she lived with three other similarly sized dogs and many cats. She was friendly and allowed all handling during her initial medical exam. Sally pulled on leash for her relief walk. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wagging. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears back, tail wag. Sally followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, playfully hopping mid game, becomes distracted towards the end. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Sally playfully engaged with Toy, attempting to play and interact with handler, keeping a firm grip with loose body and wagging tail. When off leash with other dogs, Sally rushes the gate with a tense body and begins barking, eventually growling as the greeting continues; she is muzzled for the interaction. She enters the pen and maintains her stiff body and stand forward on her toes and T’s the shoulders of the helper dog. She walks away when he does not do anything. Due to her reactive behavior with other dogs, the Behavior Team feels Sally would do best with an Experienced adopter. She may do best as the only resident dog. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, tail wag, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, playful mid game. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy 1. Dog attempts to solicit play with Toy and handler, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Sally rushes the gate with a tense body and begins barking, eventually growling as the greeting continues; she is muzzled for the interaction. She enters the pen and maintains her stiff body and stand forward on her toes and T’s the shoulders of the helper dog. She walks away when he does not do anything.
02/11/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sally has shown barrier reactivity, both on leash and off, when she sees other dogs; she has not yet been introduced to another dog without a muzzle. She is stiff when interacting but allows dogs to sniff and interact without escalating. She came from a home with a male dog, but they arrived at the care center as a stray, so their in-home behaviors are unknown. The behavior department recommends Sally does not go to a home with other dogs until her behaviors and social skills can be followed up on. Sally rushes the gate with a tense body and begins barking, eventually growling as the greeting continues; she is muzzled for the interaction. She enters the pen and maintains her stiff body and stand forward on her toes and T’s the shoulders of the helper dog. She walks away when he does not do anything. 2/17 update: Sally is muzzled for her second interaction. When she is introduced off-leash, she displays a tense body and hard stare while being sniffed. While being sniffed by the male greeter, she begins to flag for him, and does not offer correction when he attempts to mount, though her body remains tense.
