A volunteer writes: I knew right away that Salem and I were going to be good friends on the walk. He just had the most friendly demeanor inside his kennel, with soft body language, and a constant tail wag. And if you’re looking for friendly, you can start right here with him. He’s a joy to be with, wiggling and wagging his body as he walks on the sidewalk. People say that dogs can smile, and Salem’s facial expression is proof of that. He is so happy to be out with his handler, that he gives you constant attention and affection. I can tell that his former owner must have loved him dearly. Salem would love to be in a home again. And seeing how he was with us today, I have no doubt that he will make a great companion with someone out there. Come by the center and meet Salem, a.k.a. Mr. Friendly.
01/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Neutered, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Respectful and jumpy around an 8 year old. Behavior toward dogs: While on walks, Salem would pull on leash to go near other dogs he saw. Behavior toward cats: Salem was tolerant around a friend’s cat. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, sniffs but does not fully engage. This may be due to environment as owner reports Salem enjoys playing with squeaky toys & stuffed animals. Dog-dog: 2. 12/23/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/23/16 15:53 Basic Information: Salem is a 3 year old neutered male Pitbull Mix that has no past medical issues that the owner is aware of but currently suffers from skin allergies. Owner has had Salem since he was 3 years but had to surrender due to landlord issues. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Salem is friendly and will try to jump on everyone to say hello. He has been around an 8 year old child & was always respectful around the child but would jump on the child too much not knowing his size. Owner did not have any other animal in the home but stated that whenever Salem would see a dog outside, he would pull on the leash to go near the other dog. He was also very tolerant around owner’s friend’s cat. Salem has never bit another person or animal while in the care of the owner. Behavior: Salem is not bothered by fireworks/thunderstorms, having his food treats or toys taken away, being pushed off furniture, being held/restrained, being disturbed while sleeping, being given a bath, or if an unfamiliar person would approach owner and Salem outside. When someone would approach owners home, Salem would bark and want to go play with that person. For a New Family to Know: Salem is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable with a medium to high activity level. In the home, he would follow the owner around from room to room for a while & then go to his favorite spot. Salem enjoys playing with squeaky toys & stuffed animals. He was kept indoors only & is mostly house trained. Owner stated that he would go potty about once a week if his schedule was thrown off or owner missed his walking time. Whenever Salem was left alone he would be gated off in the home or else he would destroy items in the house such as shoes. Owner never left Salem alone in the yard so behavior is unknown. He knows the cues sit, down, go in the tub and paw. For exercise, owner would take Salem on slow walks on the leash. Owner stated that on the leash, Salem pulls very hard & would run away if he was walked off leash. Behavior during intake: Salem was loose and wiggly during intake. I Was able to scan for a mc, collar and take a picture without any issues. He kept trying to jump on anyone who passed by and play.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/23/2016 Salem was social and allowed all handling during his medical exam. ENERGY LEVEL:
RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: We recommend regularly scheduled walks as Salem does best with a structured walk schedule. _X_Destructive behavior: Salem may benefit from crate training when home alone to decrease any chewing of household items as previously reported. He should always be left with durable, long-lasting chews and other engaging toys when he is left alone, to avoid chewing of inappropriate items. Examples are Kongs and Nylabones. The environment should also be managed by keeping shoes in locations where Salem does not have access, so he cannot destroy any shoes in his new home.
