SAFE 10/21/17
Hello, my name is Saint. My animal id is #9255. I am a female tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 09-Oct-2017.
Saint 9255 is at risk for a respiratory illness (CIRDC). Behaviorally, Saint has been a bit nervous and startles easily, sometimes avoiding contact, but she has also been human-social and warms up with a slow, gentle approach. We recommend an experienced adopter prepared to work with these behaviors.

Saint would walk on a leash but was very caution. The counselor did not remove her harness or put a ID collar her during the intake due to her tense body and panting.

Summary (1):: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Saint is nervous- displaying a tuck tail. As she continues to participate in Playgroup, she becomes bouncy- and solicits play with paw slaps. Saint displays assertive behavior- tip toeing and mounting the other dogs. Saint was brought in as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Saint be placed in a home with resident dogs that are respectful and tolerant of her assertive behavior. 10/10: Saint displays soft but nervous posture when interacting with a novel male dog. Her tail is slightly tucked when she briefly greets him, before exploring the pens. 10/12: Saint mostly kept to herself throughout her session. When her session was about to end, she engaged in conflicting behavior- play bowing, while displaying a tense posture. She runs away when interrupted by handlers. 10/13-16: Saint attempts to engage in gentle play, soliciting with paw slaps and deep play bows. She is assertive and attempts to mount while whining. 10/17: Saint displayed a stiff body, raised hackles before muzzle punching the novel male dog. She is separated and the session is ended.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: Saint appears to easily startle and become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Though observed to be human-social, Saint may need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Saint to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations.
