05/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: We have a naked dog here at the care center….She so needs your help to look her best. She does not mind which color will be her new dress as even without one, she already looks so beautiful… Sadie indeed, came to us with only a few hair on her back. She is not skinny, no and she has already carried one litter or two. She is a cute little Labrador mix with a square face framed by lovely flapping ears. Sadie is quite timid but sociable and unbothered by nearing peers, big or small. She is a bit hand shy or is it that her skin is right now too sensitive. She does not mind me putting a bow around her neck and leashed easily, we go for a short and easy walk around the block. Free in a pen, she does come when called, is not too fond of my treats but loved rotisserie chicken… She even sat on command for food…Now we are talking..Sadie is a little more daring and put her head in my lap for caresses. She is young and her life as a pet has not started yet. Will you be the one showing her what a real master or family can offer to a dog? Sadie can’t wait to meet you and become your forever best friend.
05/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sadie came into our center after a member of the public found her near Yankee Stadium. She was soft during intake, allowed all handling, sat on cue. She walked nicely on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. Sadie was friendly and affectionate upon entering SAFER assessment room, at times whining near the exit door, jumping up lightly to solicit petting. Sadie held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body soft. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral. Sadie initially ran playfully during Tag game, but crouched and flinched at each pass. It should be noted this could be due medical reasons as she is missing over 95% of her fur and some areas appear raw/sensitive. Sadie gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Sadie playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose, wiggly body. She approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level, soft. Behaviorally, Sadie would do well with an Average adopter. She may require a slow approach for petting and handling as medically her skin may be sensitive, but does appear to enjoy being pet and giving/receiving affection. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, crouching and flinching Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
