A volunteer writes: Handsome? Check. Sachi is the proud owner of a gorgeous fawn and cream coat with a stunning pair of hazel eyes to boot. Well-mannered? Check, check. Sachi sits for treats, takes them ever so gently, and even gives paw when the feeling’s right. Playful, sweet, charming, and fun? Check, check…well you get the idea. He handles his business in short order and as we pause at a traffic light looks up at me with that irresistible grin and I swear, gives me a WINK! (Blush) Once back at the shelter Sachi continues his charm offensive posing endlessly and beautifully for photos and wow’ing me with his perfect “sit.” Sachi is an easy, wonderful, happy boy one who would undoubtedly be a perfect addition to your home. Handsome, well-mannered, playful, sweet, charming, and fun? Sachi checks every box and is now ready for his forever home. Come “check” him out today. Sachi is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
08/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sachi pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. Sachi was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He did a lot of jumping up, body checking and played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction. He took the toy with a soft body language. According to his finder, he was going to keep him but Sachi was aggressive to his Shih Tzu and Pitbull. Sachi was around 5 adults and one 7 year old child. Sachi is an active dog who requires a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home as he shows some concerning behavior towards other dogs, on leash and off; proper management is highly advised in order to help Sachi thrive in a new environment. It is also recommended he be given an appropriate period of decompression to help him acclimate to his new surroundings. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Sachi to new and unfamiliar situations. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog responds with her tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: Sachi displays high reactivity when walking by other dogs while on leash (vocalizing, growling, lunging toward). For safety, a basket muzzle is applied to Sachi. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Sachi is tense, and runs toward the female greeter dog while growling. When the female greeter dog moves away, he remains tense, and approaches to intensely sniff/lick her rear. This behavior appears to be rooted in sexual motivated. The behavior team feels that should be allowed time to acclimate to life outside the shelter environment as the only resident dog.
