07/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: For a high-powered alternative energy source, forget about wind and solar. Miss Rylee and her sunny smiles are all you need to power through the gloomiest day! She’s a non-stop party girl with kisses, hugs and love to spare, and every person she meets is granted instant BFF status and an unlimited supply of happy tail wags. Not one to let life pass her by, Rylee pulls with enthusiasm on leash, but handles well in a harness and seems to be quite house trained, taking care of her business tout suite once we step outside. Free in the yard, she puts all her Hound-y senses to work on grass sniffing, air tasting and watching other volunteers and their dogs with keen interest through the fence, but we take a short break for a gentle game of tug-o-war, a polite rejection of the treats I have on offer, and of course, even more snuggle time! As delighted as she is to be with us humans, Rylee’s no fan of other dogs. But she’s a smart girl, and with training, could learn to tone down her excited response to their presence and make leash walking easier for everyone. She may be a petite pup, but no one packs a more fun-loving personality. With enough energy for 5 dogs and a heart as big as a lion, you won’t even mind that she needs to be your one and only. Rylee aced her behavior assessment and now she’s ready to rock’n’roll her way out the front door and into the experienced forever home of her dreams. Come meet her today!
07/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/13/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/16/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Dog jumps on assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Rylee was social throughout her assessment and displayed no concerning behaviors. She jumped up on the assessor a bit in a social manner. PLAYGROUP: Rylee has displayed tense, defensive behavior when introduced to dogs in the care center. She has been observed to become reactive to other dogs who pass by on leash. At this time, Rylee may be most comfortable in a single dog residence until follow up on her behavior around them can be followed up on outside of the shelter. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Rylee allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/14/17 During her initial medical exam, Rylee was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Rylee so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_Single dog home: Rylee has displayed tense, defensive behavior when introduced to dogs in the care center. History around dogs is not available at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Rylee jumps up on people a bit. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Rylee has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, barking and growling. Rylee may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
07/14/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
