Socialization: When strangers enter the home Ryder is very friendly. He will alert bark, but stops once they are inside and has a loose, wiggly body. He has no aggressive behaviors reported when playing with children or adults. He has not lived with cats or other dogs previously. Behavior: Ryder has no guarding behavior with food, toys or treats. He allowed for his caretakers to bathe and groom him without any issues, but they had not clipped his nails. Overall he is described as being friendly, affectionate and playful. When home, he likes to follow the family around and be in the same room as them. For a New Family to know: Ryder is crate trained and is well behaved if left out of it when the family is not home. He is house trained and will go on grass and cement. He eats both wet and dry food and loves table scraps from dinner. He does not know any commands yet but walks well on the leash and only pulls if he sees something he wants to get to. Admissions intake behavior: Ryder was very friendly with the counselor. He allowed for collaring but was very active. He did not respond to the command sit but would lay down on his own and sit for a while.

A volunteer writes: LOW-RIDER ALERT! Ryder, the absolute man of my dreams, may have short little legs and a big old head, but his heart is made of pure gold. This sweet boy loves to give kisses, seems housetrained, and has had no issues walking by other dogs on our walks. He loves treats, people, and snuggles. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Ryder is anxious- barking and pacing-in the pen before greeting the novel male and female dog. He briefly calms down to interact with the novel female, but continues to pace the pen and being vocal. According to the surrender, Ryder was not socialized with other dogs outside of the Care Center. The Behavior Department recommends that Ryder be placed in a home with a well socialized dog that is respectful and tolerant of his anxious behavior. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/18/17: Upon intake Ryder was very friendly and active, he allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/19/17: During his medical examination, Ryder was hard barking but hyper in the cage, he did allow all handling during the exam.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Ryder so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety- Ryder has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Ryder, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
