08/03/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/03/16 14:04 Rutland was given to owner as a stray and has been in their care for two days. While in client care she was described as being friendly, affectionate and playful with a medium activity. Has temp. lived with two children age 7 and 4. With the daughter she grown to be protective and friendly, with the autistic son she was aggressive and attempted to lunge. He also lived with cats and was fearful no experience with other dogs. She was friendly when her bowl was touched and when treats, objects and toys were taken away even with the children. She is good with baths and having her coat brushed. When unfamiliar people approached you or the home she was friendly. Rutland was mostly kept indoors walked 4 times a day and ate Pedigree mix both dry and wet 3 times a day. When home she followed the family round or stayed by their side. She knows how to sit and usually potty on the grass or cement. For exercise she went on leash walks and didn’t pull. Off leash she can be very playful and is anxious when she sees a ball.
08/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: What a chunky brindle treat! Rutland might be compact, but she is jam packed with personality. She is friendly, fun and just a delight in every way. She might pull a little bit on the leash, but constantly looks back at me with her tongue hanging out of her mouth and a look of wonder in her eyes. She seems to have some housetraining, knows “sit”, and is a tennis ball fanatic. Watching her with one is like watching a clumsy ballroom dance. She seems to intentionally lose the ball, only to pounce on it moments later, will roll it under the bench and crawl under there with it (and play peek-a-boo with me as she pokes her head out), and constantly busts out adorable frog-legged poses. While often it seems like her world is just her and the ball, she invites me to join too: she’ll prop her paws on my lap (ball in mouth), loves to be petted, and give kisses. When I put her back in her cage she sort of yells at me in protest — completely endearing! I promise, Rutland will leave you with a smile plastered on your face…come meet her today at Brooklyn ACC!
08/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rutland was surrendered into the shelter on 8/3/16; she was described as friendly and affectionate with a medium activity level. She lived with a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old, and was reported to be generally friendly with the 4-year-old but responded fearfully to the older child (who has autism). She did have at least one instance of very rough play with the younger child. During SAFER Rutland was loose and wiggly, she was anxious and mouthy when interacting with the assessor, she allowed the handling item to be conducted with loose body posture and was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment . Rutland was a bit mouthy at time, though it appeared to be an attention-seeking behavior. She appears to be very sociable, affectionate, and with a high energy level. Due to her tendency to become mouthy when excited, we recommend experienced adopters who will recognize signs of arousal and allow Rutland time to deescalate when she becomes worked up. She will likely benefit from reward-based, force-free training to learn cues and exercise her mind as well as her body. She needs to be provided with appropriate outlets for her considerable energy; we recommend physical exercise as well as Kongs and other food-dispensing toys for her meals. We feel she is best suited to an adopter with a some dog experience, who can provide her with the guidance she needs to be a successful family pet. Due to her exuberant energy level and the possibility of overwhelming young children, we recommend a home with children over five years old. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, approaches assessor at the end of tag. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand with moderate pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand with moderate pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Playgroup:When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Rutland is nervous as she greets the other dog. She chooses to move away when the other dog attempts to greet her. She mostly keeps to herself as she explores the pen.
