SAFER

Rusty came to us as a stray; so we have no behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter environment. He walked well on the leash and thought nervous displayed some interest in interacting with the assessor with soft body language. Rusty does seem to flinch a bit with fast movement, so the assessor approached him with slow body movements. Rusty allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. However, Rusty did become a bit tense and uncomfortable during the paw squeeze. Though uncomfortable he maintained his composure and did not escalate to more concerning behaviors. Rusty only displayed minimal interest in the toy item on this portion of the assessment. Due to Rusty’s fearful nature and wary behavior of fast movements we recommend he go home with an experienced adopter and no young children at this time.

Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit tense; his tail is low, stress panting. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is low, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back.

Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, and a bit fearful.

Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw, body a bit stiff.

Squeeze 2:2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw, body a bit stiff.

Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away.

PLAY GROUP

When off leash with other dogs, Rusty approaches the gate with a soft, low body. He becomes anxious, increasing his panting and tucking his tail and backs away when the helper dog increases her energy and solicits play.

4/26: Rusty greets the other dog at the gate with a nervous posture. Once let in the pen he becomes uncomfortable with the other dogs presence, becoming tense and lip licking. He is sensitive with anal sniff and handlers touch.
