His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Rumble was very friendly and affectionate towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: Rumble was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Rumble initially demand barks at the novel female dog, before entering the pens. He displays raised hackles while exchanging sniff, then engages in cooperative play- with the goal to mount. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 9/2/17: Upon intake Rumble was friendly, loose and wiggly. He allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/4/17: During his medical examination, Rumble was friendly, goofy, loves attention and allowed all handling. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATION: 9/9/17: While at an offsite adoption event, Rumble was chewing a rawhide when a handler went to take the rawhide out of Rumble’s mouth. Rumble snapped but did not make contact. ENERGY LEVEL: Rumble is described as an active, exuberant dog in his previous home. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children under 13: Due to escalating to a snap over a valued resource (rawhide), we recommend an adult-only home who can carefully manage the environment should guarding behavior be seen in the home. Potential challenges: _X_ Resource guarding: Possible food or possession guarding behavior was observed in the shelter when an item with which Rumble was engaged was taken away. We caution that nothing should ever be taken directly from Rumble’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. We recommend that Rumble be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. _X_House soiling: Rumble is reported to have frequent accidents in the house, and appears not to have been housetrained in the past. He will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Destructive behavior: Rumble is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on shoes and toys. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Rumble will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. The environment should also be managed to prevent Rumble from gaining access to inappropriate items.
