11/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Rufus is a dog who has a lot to say and will say even more if you do not understand what he wants….Rufus does not like to be in a kennel. He is right because there is so much more to do outside. He does not want to get “cabin fever”. Rufus loves treats and will let you know when you are not fast enough giving them to him. Same with the ball….He is really a fun and very pleasant pooch to be with. To start with, he is a pleasure for the eyes. Healthy, well built and so well dressed in his light grey and anthracite catahoula coat. He is a great walker, never pulling on the leash, quite house trained (he does mark his territory), does not take you for a ride when he sees pigeons or squirrels and seems to like other dogs met, big and small. He does not play with the rope and is not mouthy. He sits on command..when he wants to and does not mind posing for the camera. Rufus is quite sociable and seems happy to have people coming to say hello. Lots of butt wiggling and tail wagging…A smiling face and bright eyes. He enjoys caresses, kisses and the scratching of his ears. At first not too interested by the ball, he appreciated the game later on and even took his ball to the adoption quarters although we had to leave it at the door…Of note is that Rufus does not guard treats or balls. He appears to love to be in playgroups with his pears and plays rambunctiously. In a nutshell, Rufus is a young and gorgeous guy with character, lively, sociable, playful and very friendly who will make a great friend for life. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center.

11/09/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Rufus engages in rough play with male and female dogs. It has been observed that Rufus has been selective when engaging with male dogs, and at times becomes tense with potential to escalate during interaction (this has typically occured when introduced to other unaltered males). Based on observations made on Rufus while in our care, the behavior department recommends slow introductions between Rufus and other social female dogs. Rufus may benefit from a pre-adoption interaction with other altered male dogs in a potential future home. It cannot be said for certain how his behaviors in the care center will translate into a home environment. 11/9: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Rufus is exuberantly playful and engages in a rougher style of play. Rufus becomes anxious in the yard when not actively engaging. 11/12: Rufus engages in rough, running play with females and altered males. However, he exhibits status seeking behaviors with an unaltered male and escalates with no provocation. He will bark incessantly when play stops.
