Ruby A1123489 is at risk for a New Hope Only behavior determination. She has been highly fearful and has avoided interaction in the care center since intake. 08/27/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/27/17 20:08 Basic Information: Ruby is a 3 year old, female, large breed dog. The previous owner got her as a gift from a friend when Ruby was a puppy. Unfortunately, she can no longer keep her dog at her apartment so she must give her away. Socialization: Ruby is described as friendly and outgoing with everyone she meets. She can be a bit shy but will open up to you. She has lived around teens but never around any young children and is described as relaxed and playful with them. She doesn’t really play much but when she does play she is exuberant. She lived with another older pit bull and they were respectful of each other. They played exuberantly. She has never been around cats or other animals so owner is unsure how she will react. Behavior: Ruby may have accidents around inside the house and is very anxious when left alone at home. She will destroy things inside the house as well. She isn’t bothered during fireworks or storms. She will growl if you try to take food, treats, or toys from her. She is ok with being pushed off furniture, being held, and being disturbed while sleeping. She is afraid of baths and having her nails trimmed. She will try to get away. She barks when unfamiliar people come towards the door. For a new family to know: Ruby is described as a friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, mellow dog that can get anxious at times. She has a very high energy level. She loves cuddling and going outside for walks. She will follow you around the house when you’re home. When she is home alone she may get anxious and destroy things in home. She is mostly indoors with a few walks a day. She may have accidents a couple of times a week and likes to go on cement when being walked. She sleeps with owner and eats dry food twice a day. She knows how to sit, stay and come. Upon intake, Ruby was calm but got anxious while waiting. When owner arrived she started growling and lunging at counselor and medical team. She was muzzled and brought in to medical intake by a handler.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile Date of intake 8/27/2017 Unaltered female, owner surrender (in previous home for 3 years, since she was a puppy) Previously lived with: Adults, Teenagers, one older similarly sized dog Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing, a bit shy but will warm up Behavior toward children: Relaxed and playful with resident teens Behavior toward dogs: Respectful of other resident dog Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Will growl if attempt to take away food, toys, treats Bite history: Housetrained: Partially, may have accidents a few times a week and when home alone Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, mellow, anxious at times with a very high energy level Other notes: Ruby may destroy things when left alone in the home. Owner reports she enjoys cuddling on the couch. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 8/30/2017 Summary: Ruby is difficult to remove from her kennel, lunging and snapping. She has allowed minimal handling from the caretakers here at the center. Out of concern for her stress levels, we feel Ruby is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see her owner surrender profile for a full summary of her behavior in her previous home. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Upon approach, Ruby is growling, snarling, and charging at the handler. Upon opening the kennel door, Ruby crawls away to the back of the kennel with fearful body language. It takes several attempts to leash Ruby but she’s finally leashed when distracted by a second handler. Once outside she remains stiff and alert, and does not seek attention but allows petting. She growled when approached by a second person but stopped when the person looked away and was easily distracted. When the handler attempted to bring her towards the fence to greet a calm male dog she backed up and would not approach. She was easily clipped and returned to her kennel. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Date of intake 8/27/2017 During intake, Ruby was initially calm when older teen was in the room, a bit anxious. When adult arrived, Ruby became tense, growling and lunging at counselor. ENERGY LEVEL: Her owner describes Ruby as having a very high energy level. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Owner reports Ruby does not have any past experience with young children. Due to how uncomfortable Snow is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Ruby has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Owner reports Ruby may have accidents in the home when left alone. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Ruby was observed to growl when engaged with items. We advise against ever removing items from Ruby’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. _X_Destructive behavior: Ruby is reported to show destructive behavior in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Ruby will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Ruby gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Ruby, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Ruby to initiate interactions with new people.
