03/22/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/22/17 14:20 Ruby is friendly and outgoing towards strangers. She lives with a 15 year old and has spent time around young children of all ages and is relaxed and playful with them. She doesn’t really play with the children but allows them to play with her and plays gently with adults. She lives with a male Pomeranian who she is relaxed and playful with. She also has spent time around dogs on the street and is always outgoing and friendly. She plays gently with dogs and has never spent time around cats so it’s unknown how she would react. She has never bitten a person but has bitten the Pomeranian she lives with when he came home from the groomer twice. During loud noises such as thunderstorms, Ruby isn’t bothered and goes about her normal business. She isn’t bothered when her food bowl or treats are taken away but will sometimes let out a growl. She isn’t bothered when a toy is taken away and listens to “get down” when her owner wants her off of furniture. When held from something she wants, Ruby struggles but eventually stops and listens. She isn’t bothered when awoken from her slumber and tolerates baths and being brushed. The groomers usually clip her nails and they have never told the owner of any issues. When someone unfamiliar approaches her home, Ruby barks and then becomes friendly when they walk in. When someone unfamiliar approaches her humans, she jumps up on them for a good sniff. Ruby is friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable. She always wants attention. She has a high activity level and when she’s ready to play enjoys chewing and tugging on bones and being chased in the dog park. Her owner loves how loveable she is and how much she enjoys cuddling. When her owner is home, Ruby follows her around and always hangs out in the same room. She’s kept mostly indoors and sleeps on either her owner’s bed or on the couch in the living room. She is house-trained and always makes it outside to go potty or will go on her wee wee pads. She’s very well-behaved when left home alone and has never been crate-trained. She knows sit, come, down, bath, and outside. For exercise, Ruby enjoys brisk walks and off-leash dog parks. She pulls lightly on leash. She eats 1 and a half cups of Supreme dry dog food, twice a day. During the second feeding, her owner usually slips in some Beneful wet. Her favorite treats are chicken and beef.
03/28/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend but our beautiful Ruby is ready to give them a run for their money! She’s a gorgeous Hound mix with the best spots in town and after a shy start her true, loving colors are now shining through as brightly as her smile. Ruby’s a family gal who lived with a teen and spent time with kids of all ages and while she’s not one to start a game, she’s happy to join in and would let the children play around her without complaint. She had a Pomeranian brother and enjoyed a good chase at the dog park and it’s clear that spending time in our playgroups has really helped her come out of her shell. We’re told she’s house trained and recognizes commands for sit, come, get down, outside, and even bath and she showed off her sit very nicely for some treats (chicken and beef are her favorites) before taking them softly from my hand. Ruby’s former owner said their favorite thing about her is ‘how lovable she is and how much she enjoys cuddling’ and I got a little sneak peek myself when we shared a rest and some gentle cheek kisses on a backyard bench. Mother Nature blessed her with breathtaking good looks to which a healthy diet and regular trips to the groomers have added the finishing touches of a nice manicure and a silky coat. It’s clear that home life, not a Care Center, is this good girl’s real element and if anyone is ready to shine in the spotlight it’s Miss Ruby. She’s already spayed and keen to dance her way out of a kennel and straight into your heart as soon as possible. Forget diamonds or gold, the real hidden treasure is right here and her name is Ruby!
03/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 3/22/17 Spayed Female, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults a 15 year old and a male pomeranian Behavior toward strangers: Social Behavior toward children: Relaxed Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Yes, Ruby will sometimes growl when her food or treats are taken away. Bite history: Ruby has never bitten a person but has bitten the dog in home twice Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Social, affectionate and excitable with a high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/26/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful, her tail is low. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth open and panting. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Focused on the exit. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Ruby appeared fearful throughout her assessment. She was panting, tense, and focused on the exit. She did show social behavior, soliciting attention from the assessor at times, and she allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Ruby was initially uncomfortable when interacting with other dogs but has warmed up and showed softer body language; she has engaged in brief play when solicited. Her owner reports she “lived with a male Pomeranian who she was relaxed and playful with. She also has spent time around dogs on the street and was always outgoing and friendly. She played gently with dogs.” She did bite the resident dog on two occasions when he came back from the groomers. The behavior department feels that Ruby should be the only resident dog at this time until she is allowed time to decompress and acclimate to her new environment. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/22/17 During her initial medical exam Ruby was tense but allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Ruby’s previous owner described her as having a high activity level. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to potential possession guarding noted by the previous owner and fearful behavior displayed at the care center. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Ruby can be left alone while eating so she does not need to escalate from a growl. An in depth interaction with older children is recommended prior to adoption. _X_Resource guarding (Ruby’s previous owner notes that she may growl when her food bowl or treats are touched. We recommend that Ruby be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Ruby’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games.) _X_Fearful (Ruby is appears to be fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Ruby the option to walk away from any social interaction. Ruby should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Ruby’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Ruby would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.)
03/23/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Ruby was initially uncomfortable when interacting with other dogs but has warmed up and showed softer body language; she has engaged in brief play when solicited. 3/23: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog Ruby is nervous and attempts to avoid him. 3/24: Ruby is fearful and avoids interaction with the male greeter dog. 3/25-27: Ruby is in a larger group of male and female dogs. She is still fearful but will approach dogs to sniff. Ruby is soft and gives low wags to handlers. 3/28-31: Ruby is softer, approaching calm dogs to sniff and engaging in brief play when solicited. She quickly becomes anxious, however, and will bark to seek exit.
