Basic Information:
Ruby is a 5 year old female Pit Bull Terrier Mix that has no past or current medical issues that the previous owner is aware of. Previous owner received her from a friend but can no longer keep her due to having financial difficulty and also not having the time to devote to taking care of her.
Socialization:
According to the previous owner, around strangers, Ruby is friendly and outgoing. Around adults and children (ages 5-8 yrs.), Ruby is respectful and playful. With adults & children, Ruby plays in a gentle manner. Ruby has lived with one other medium sized dog (male) and was respectful and playful and played in a gentle manner. Ruby has never interacted with larger dogs so her behavior is unknown. Ruby has never been exposed to cats so behavior around them is unknown. She has never bitten a person or another animal.
Behavior:
Previous owners stated that Ruby doesn’t have any behavioral issues. Ruby isn’t bothered when any food, treat, or toy is taken from her or when she is pushed or pulled off furniture. Ruby enjoys having baths and isn’t bothered by having her coat brushed or nails trimmed. Ruby isn’t bothered when an unfamiliar person approaches the home, yard, previous owner, or a family member.
For a New Family to Know:
Ruby is described as friendly, affectionate, , and playful with a medium activity level. When in the home, Ruby is the type to follow you around seeking attention. Ruby likes stuffed toys, chew bones, and ropes. She likes to play fetch & tug. Ruby was kept indoors only and was fed dry & wet dog food. According to previous owner, Ruby is mostly house-trained and would rarely have any accidents. Ruby usually goes to the bathroom on the grass. When left alone in the home, Ruby would be well-behaved. Ruby has been crate trained and does well for up to 3 hrs. Ruby knows the command for give paw. For exercise, she enjoyed slow & brisk walks & running with the previous owner. On the leash, Ruby can pull lightly and when she would be off the leash, she would wander but come when called.

ASSESSMENT:
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on exit. She approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with gentle coaxing.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not pull back paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest. This may be due to environment as owner reports Ruby likes stuffed toys, chew bones, and ropes, likes to play fetch and tug.
Dog/dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper dog, body not stiff, tail above spine level
Summary: Ruby was calm and quiet upon entering SAFER assessment area. She was receptive to being spoken to gently and softly.
PLAYGROUP:
As per previous owner, Ruby has lived with one other medium sized dog (male) and was respectful and playful and played in a gentle manner. When off leash with other dogs ruby was polite when greeted by a social male. Ruby offers appropriate corrections to pushy and sexually motivated males and at times she was playful.
2/13 : Ruby is eager to meet other dogs and will bark through the gate before greeted off leash. She often explores the yard and did not engage in any play today. Ruby appears to do well with more mellow dogs who do not over solicit play. She offered a hard correction to a pushy and sexually motivated male, but responded well when corrected by handlers.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Ruby was relaxed and easy to handle during her initial medical exam.
