08/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ruby is a five year old mixed breed being surrendered to our care centers due to the owner not having the time to provide the appropriate amount of care Ruby needs. Her former owner stated that Ruby is fearful of strangers and if someone reaches for her she will attempt to bite. If they let her warm up to them and give her some time she will allow them to pet her. Ruby is also protective of her teats and bones and will growl and run away if someone comes near her while she has them. It was also noted that Ruby gets mouthy while laying but has never broken skin. On approaching the assessment room, Ruby growled towards a staff member, making direct eye contact, body tense. Upon entering the assessment room Ruby appeared social towards the assessor, though as soon as any form of touch or direct contact was attempted, Ruby would stiffen and hard stare. It has been noted by several staff members that Ruby tolerates minimal handling and will snap with intent to bite when she is uncomfortable. Because of this, the behavior team feels a SAFER would be inappropriate at this time as it would not provide any useful or helpful information. It is recommended Ruby be placed with a New Hope placement partner who can provide an experienced foster home where she is allowed to decompress and acclimate to a new environment at her own pace. Force-free, reward based training is recommended when introducing/exposing Ruby to new and unfamiliar situations.
