A volunteer writes:
I had been eying Ruby for days… We all like oldies as most of them are goodies…. Ruby, who upon arrival at the care center contradicted the old adage, revealed to be just that……”A good old soul”, loving, giving, comfi looking and so needy of human presence. I fell for her the day I spotted her in her kennel, grumpy and growling, bewildered at having lost all what was her life….Her home and her family. Indeed, Ruby’s owner were evicted and could not take her with them…Ruby calmed down over a few days, even performed like a star on her behavioral evaluation and joined her peers in playgroups. These gatherings might not really be her cup of tea, which is often the case for older dogs put to mingle with other pooches . I sat in front of her den. Ruby took a good look at me through her eyes shaded with chronic discharge(she has entropion). She got up and was leashed easily. She strolled at a good pace, did the stairs and ate dry liver treats from my hand. I left her alone in a pen under the watch of another volunteer to clean her kennel and when i came back, Ruby was sitting like an I on the bench, waiting for me, like she was my dog…As I settled next to her, she spread her forelegs on my lap and started to kiss me and kiss me..like there was no tomorrow. I was melting like butter under the sun, tears running down my cheeks. I was alone, TG–. I am a big girl afterall.. I do not know Ruby, none of us does….But, oh boy, is she a feel good dog….I had a hundred things to do and could not leave her… It was so tough to bring her back and settle her down in her kennel….Ruby is really on my mind. I miss her presence and I hope that a good outcome will happen for her… The warmth of a home. The love of a master or a family. Ruby, our sweet Rubia is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center for her life to start again…
