Ruboy
Hello, my name is Ruboy. My animal id is #11650. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 03-Nov-2017.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Ruboy is a handsome and elegant gent, a bit thin but healthy looking and very well dressed in his semi long hair well groomed coat. His copper eyes are keen, vigilant and he pays careful attention to his surroundings. Ruboy is a bit tense in his kennel. He does not know me and being 5 years old, he has been around, is experienced and wants to make sure that I am an ok person to be with. A great walker he is, pulling occasionally, doing his business on the way and leaving birds and squirrels alone. He seems a little nervous and backs off when another dog gets “in his face” and in particular when a huge male zeroed on us at the hand of a careless owner. We were so lucky. Ruboy loves treats, he can sit very nicely for them although at the beginning of our encounter he was not willing to do so. He started to wag his tail too…. We were making progress.. Today was another day. Ruboy was much more active, still not a fan of his kennel but so excited to go out, run and jump high after a ball or to catch a treat. He was really “all out” , displayed a big smile and even was a little too much stimulated. Down time, Ruboy listens, comes, sits, accepts treats and back to his kennel with a soft bedding. See you later, my friend, and lets dream together of a comfy home, filled with treats, toys and mostly the love of a master. Ruby is at the Manhattan Care center waiting for you. Additional bio: Ruboy, although still not a fan of his kennel, has softened so much since his arrival. I got such a big smile today in the park, and I was able to catch it with my camera. He is such an easy walk, attuned to my instructions, undisturbed by little critters and other dogs, sitting on command, taking treats nicely and resting by my side on a bench. He really enjoys his time out, too. Reading other volunteers’ comments, I see that he has been appreciated all around despite his stern looks and dark suit. A good and loving heart is hiding underneath, I really know it, as I have been walking him quite a bit by now. Ask to meet Ruboy, see what a gem he truly is, and take him home as your forever best friend.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Upon intake, Ruboy took treats gently. Ruboy was reluctant to leave the carrier but when he was spoken to in a high pitched voice, he immediately came out. Ruboy allowed all handling.
Basic Information:: Ruboy was brought into the PCT as a stray so there is limited information on him.
How is this dog around strangers?: Ruboy is initially shy and a little scared around strangers but then he warms up. Ruboy does not react when spoken to at first but when he is spoken to in a high pitched and playful manner, he becomes friendly otherwise he retreats and tries to ignore interaction.
Date of intake:: 11/3/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 11/5/2017
Look:: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body low and a bit fearful.
Paw squeeze 1:: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw.
Flank squeeze 1:: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Flank squeeze 2:: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Toy:: 1. No interest.
Summary:: Ruboy was initially a bit timid though tolerated all handling without issue – no concerns were observed at this time.
Summary (1):: Ruboy has been polite and tolerant during interaction with dogs in the care center. The behavior department feels he may be most compatible with other respectful dogs. History around dogs is not known due to arriving as a stray. 11/6: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Ruboy offers polite greeting, then keeps mostly to himself.
Summary (2):: 11/7: Ruboy is polite when greeting the female helper dog. He greets a male dog on the other side of the fence with a soft body and wagging tail
Summary (3):: 11/8-9: Ruboy is polite and tolerant.
Date of intake:: 11/3/2017
Summary:: Fearful though responded well to being spoken to softly, once warmed up he allowed handling
Date of initial:: 11/3/2017
Summary:: Cautious, though tolerated handling
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Ruboy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: When Ruboy initially arrived at the shelter, he displayed warning behaviors in his kennel towards novel people (barking, distance increasing). However, once outside of his kennel, he displays more social behavior, seeking attention briefly and accepting treats gently.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Ruboy may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Ruboy to interact at his own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing him to new/unfamiliar situations.
