09/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Rubie is a petite girl with the kindest frosted face. And, like most things frosted, she is a real treat! Her previous owner describes her as a “loyal companion” and she comes to us due to no fault of her own. She is said to be shy around strangers and she was a little nervous when she first arrived to this strange place, but Rubie is really coming out of her shell and stealing hearts left and right! She walks beautifully on leash and tries to keep her cage clean until she can relieve herself outside. While she might not be a dog park kinda gal, she has been calm and appropriate when we’ve met other dogs through a fence. She is treat motivated and will stand on her hind legs and dance for them, sit, give paw, and do a lay down/roll over combo. She is very attentive and so, so sweet — such easy, wonderful company! On our first outing she would gently make contact by resting one paw on my leg, but now she will literally jump into my lap and hang out there. She is very wiggly and likes to play with squeaky toys, but seems to have an ideal middle aged energy level. I’m completely smitten with Rubie and hope you’ll go meet her at Brooklyn ACC!
08/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rubie previously lived with one adult, another dog and has never been around children or teenagers. The owner stated Rubie is playful and affectionate but is wary of strangers that come over the house; her body tenses and she will bark. The owner mentioned Rubie will growl and bark at the stray cats in the neighborhood. Rubie’s previous owner reports that she is highly reactive towards other dogs on leash (growls, barks, lunges); because of this Rubie is walked with a muzzle. Owner also reported that Rubie lived with another dog for five years, though they had gotten into a fight and she has since kept her seperate from him. According to the owner Rubie growls when removed off furniture and barks when she is restrained; it was noted that Rubie plays “guarding” with her toys, further detail on this was not provided. At intake it was reported Rubie was very anxious but she did allowed all handling. During SAFER Rubie came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, she was friendly and social towards the assessor. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Rubie was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Rubie was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns noted in her previous home, the behavior department feels she would be best suited for an experienced adopter in an adult only home; we also recommend being the only pet in the home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash at the care center, Rubie approaches the gate with tense face and body. She becomes uncomfortable when the other dog attempts to greet her, displaying lip licks and a stiff body. She tenses up when the other dog interacts with her for too long and slowly approaches the dog with a hard eyes. The session was ended.
08/24/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Rubie’s previous owner reported, she lived with a neuter male and recently was in an altercation with him when they were engaged in play. He also stated she attempts lunged when she sees other dogs in the street. When off leash at the Care Center, Rubie displays uncomfortable body language when interacting with male and female dogs. When the other dog interacts with her for too long and slowly approaches the dog with hard eyes. With a calmer dog, Rubie displays nervous body language, lip licking and look aways. She mostly keeps to herself as she explores the pen. The Behavior Department believes that Rubie would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, however a through dog-dog interaction can be conducted with any potential adopters’ dog to assess Rubie’s comfort level. 8/24: Rubie approaches the gate with tense face and body. She becomes uncomfortable when the other dog attempts to greet her, displaying lip licks and a stiff body. She tenses up when the other dog interacts with her for too long and slowly approaches the dog with hard eyes. The session was ended. 8/26: Rubie is a bit nervous as she greets a calm, female dog. She displays lip licks and look aways. She briefly greets her but mostly keeps to herself as she explores the pen. 9/3: Rubie mostly keeps to herself as she wanders in a group of calm male and female dogs. 9/6: Rubie displays slightly stiff body language when she initially enters in a group of male and female dogs. She is able to listen to handler interruptions and wanders in the pen. She becomes more relaxed as the session continues.
