Ruben
Hello, my name is Ruben. My animal id is #17124. I am a male brown dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 28-Dec-2017.
Ruben is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult Only determination). Ruben is very anxious with a high arousal level. The behaviors seen in kennel and outside in playgroup, Ruben may require an adopter experienced with this kind of behavior.

Summary:: Ruben came into the room anxious, he was pacing and whining around the room, he was friendly but very high energy towards the handlers.
Summary (1):: Ruben was brought in as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 12/29: When off leash at the Care Center, Ruben is sexually motivated and extremely difficult to interrupt. He displayed a high body and tail at the gate. Once the pen door is opened, he rushed the greeter dog attempting to mount her. He ignores all interruptions, and was easily frustrated when the dog runs away. He became stiff and offensively sexually motivated, mounting and wrapping his legs around the helper dog while expressing low guttural growls and attempting to grab her neck. The handlers immediately removed him and his session was ended.
Date of intake:: 12/28/2017
Summary:: Friendly and allowed all handling.
Date of initial:: 12/29/2017
Summary:: Very active and friendly
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/2/18: Due to the behavior Ruben displayed during playgroup as well as the highly aroused energy he has while in his kennel, the Behavior Team does not feel as though he is an appropriate candidate for the public adoptions room.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Ruben is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Ruben has shown during playgroup (see GROUPBEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Ruben should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Ruben associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.
Potential challenges: : Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Ruben has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Ruben, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
