As she continues to participate in group, Royalty displays social behavior, as well as assertive mounting. She listens to handler interruptions, and offers bouts of play bows. According to Royalty’s previous guardian, when she sees another dog she barks and keeps to herself. The Behavior Department recommends Royalty is to be placed with resident dogs that match her gentle play style and are tolerant of mounting behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/20/17: Upon intake Royalty was a bit timid, she growled and barked at the counselor but warmed up after some time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/21/17: During her medical examination, Royalty was wiggly but a bit jumpy with handling. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Due to potential food guarding behavior. Royalty gave an appropriate warning of her discomfort (growls) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Royalty can be left alone while eating so she does not need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. _x_Recommend no dog parks: Due to Royalty’s avoidance of other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that she only be socialized in a more controlled setting. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Royalty’s previous owner notes that she may growl when her food bowl is approached. We recommend that Royalty be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in her future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Royalty’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games.
