02/03/16 10:11 Royal is a white/gray female American pit bull terrier. She was brought into QAC as a stray. Upon intake, Royal appeared to be nervous & very shy. After a while of getting to know the counselor she opened up & allowed all handling.
02/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Royal is the most adorable little mama! She is a little shy and timid at first, warms up to be very wiggly and affectionate, and is super sweet across the board! When I first met her it was clear that treats were the way to her heart. She stayed so close to me as we navigated lots of scary noises and garbage blowing in the wind that at one point I nearly stepped on her! While I was the one that owed her an apology, she beat me to the punch; she seems very submissive. On subsequent walks I’ve felt less like a flotation device and more like we were two old friends out in search of adventure! Okay, the kind of friends that stop to hug every 20 steps, but still! She still has moments of timidity, but wags her tail, eagerly sniffs intriguing things we encounter on the street, and will even chase after tennis balls! As soon as I tell her what a good girl she is after she picks it up, she drops the ball and hurries back to me empty-mouthed. While it’s not quite what I had in mind, she’s definitely attentive! She knows “sit” and takes treats gently, but may need more housetraining (or maybe just isn’t ready to make herself vulnerable and “go” outside). She is always gently propping her paws up on me, soaks up affection, and gives kisses and soft eye contact in return. She is truly a sweetheart — please come see for yourself at Brooklyn ACC!
02/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Royal came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Royal was shy and nervous but did open up after some time. She allowed all handling. During SAFER Royal came into the assessment room calm and shy, she was friendly and affectionate towards the assessor with a slow approach. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Royal was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Royal was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Royal can be shy and fearful at time but quickly warms up to people. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Royal be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down, body a bit tense, and mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Royal greets nervously with a low, tucked body and tense face. She allows the helper dog to sniff her while displaying the same body language and wanders the pen.
