07/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Roy is a goofy big red dog with silly slanted eyes and a big smile. He is gorgeous in his imperfect rust-colored coat, and unusual looking. He is quite strong and pulls a bit on the leash. A kennel is not for him, although he is rather collected in his den. He does his business once out without much marking. Former pets put in a shelter environment are rarely the same as they were in their home, but Roy does not seem to have received much training. He is a little unruly, excited and does not sit on command. He does not want my treats, which makes me think that he is also a bit stressed, and might need a few days to get used to his temporary situation. He seems to like other dogs, even the little ones met though the pen’s door. In playgroups with his peers, he is kind of focused on mounting females which is seen quite frequently with un-neutered males. Roy is welcoming of caresses and will even kiss my face. I hope that in a few days, he will have relaxed a little and enjoy a walk around the block or the park. Roy is at the Manhattan Care Center, hoping to restart his life on the right foot with a new person and teacher.
07/07/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roy pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the look and sensitivity with a calm and relaxed body language. Roy shows a bit of concern during the tag interaction turning quickly during the second touch with a stiff body language and growling at the assessor hand. He was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 5. Dog growls Toy: 1. No interest.
07/07/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Roy was initially uncomfortable and a bit tense, however has begun to display more interest in play when solicited. While in our care, he has not yet been introduced to a male dog. The behavior team feels that Roy should require a pre-adoption interaction and be given time to become acclimated to any resident dogs at his own pace. He arrived as a stray, so in-home behavior with dogs is not known. 7/6: When off leash with other dogs, Roy displays a tense body upon entering the pen, but otherwise ignores the helper dog. 7/7: Roy continues to display a bit of a tense body, however continues to ignore otherwise. 7/8 update: Roy is sexually motivated and will continue to attempt to mount once corrected. He does not engage in play when solicited. 7/9 update: Roy engages in rough play with a boistrous female with intent to mount her. 7/12: Roy plays exuberantly with a female dog. 7/13, 7/14: Roy is playul and solicitous with a female dog. 7/15 update: Roy engages in exuberant play with a solicitous female. 7/16 update: Roy continues to engage in bouncy, running play with females. He stiffens and barks at passing male dogs.
