08/01/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/01/17 17:15 Basic Information: Roxy is an 8 month old brown brindle, unaltered female pup. The owner got her off of a breeder he knew in the neighborhood and got her around 2 months old. She last went to the vet about 6 months ago and has no known health problems. Socialization: Around strangers Roxy is friendly and outgoing. She previously lived with many different children ages infant and older. She plays with children and adults very exuberant. Roxy has played with dogs of all sizes and is very exuberant with them at the dog park. She’s never bitten another human or animal previously. Behavior: Roxy often pees inside and isn’t completely house-trained yet. When alone in the home she tends to get anxious and starts destroying things in the home if they’re in reach. While fireworks are going off she gets terrified and tries to hide. She isn’t bothered when taking away the food bowl, any treats or toys away from her. She loves getting bathes and jumps into the water. She doesn’t like getting brushed too much and will bite at the brush and has never had her nails trimmed. She’ll bark if someone approached the home but is friendly when someone approaches the owner. For a New Family to Know: Roxy is friendly, excitable and at times pushy. She has a high activity level and loves her squeaky toys. She loves to play fetch and to play tug a war. She has mainly been kept indoors and has a few accidents in the home a few times a month. She eats dry Puppy chow food and loves milk bones. When left alone she’ll bark or whine and is crate trained but doesn’t do too well. Her commands are sit, paw and come. She loves brisk walks on the leash but she’ll pulls a bit hard. Behavior During Intake: Roxy was willing to greet me with a wiggly body and jumped on me with an open mouth. Once I placed our leash on her she was very tense and getting reactive by making quick pulls and retreated backwards on the leash. She still let me collar her and take a picture just fine.
08/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Roxy is my idea of a great puppy. She is gorgeous, healthy, lively, playful, friendly with all, a bit naive and very affectionate. I would spend a whole day with her at the care center if I did not have to attend to other dogs, too. She pulls a little on the leash in excitement, is not fully house trained as related to us by her former owners, but this is probably the extent of her flaws that can be easily remedied with regular puppy training. Roxy is always happy to see someone at her door. She wiggles and wags as expected from a good dog. She is a bit shy at first then warms up quickly with gentle words, treats and a toy or a ball. She welcomes other people, staff or volunteers entering our area. It is obvious that Roxy has not only been well cared for but she was also very much loved by her former family. She lived and play with children of all ages and frequented regularly a doggy playground. Here at the care center, in playgroups, Roxy enjoys very much her time with her peers, males and females. Roxy is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to start…with you…a new chapter in her life, this time, for ever.
08/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 8/1/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for six months) Previously lived with: Adults and children (all ages) Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Exuberant Behavior toward dogs: Exuberant Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Roxy is described as friendly, excitable, and at times pushy with a high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/3/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, body soft, bit fearful when tagged, cowers. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Roxy was social during her assessment, jumping up and seeking attention. She became a bit fearful with quick movements, cowering when afraid. She allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior. PLAYGROUP: Roxy is exuberantly playful and social with other dogs in the care center. Her previous owner describes her as having been “exuberant” around other dogs. Based on these observations, the behavior department feels that she may be most compatible with other dogs who are playful and social. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Roxy had a wiggly body but became tense and retreated when leashed. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/1/17 During her initial medical exam, Roxy allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owners describe Roxy as a high-energy dog. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Roxy is a bit fearful at the care center and seems particularly fearful of fast movements, jumping away from them. It is important to always go slow and give Roxy the option to walk away from any social interaction. Roxy should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Roxy’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Roxy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
