05/16/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Our gorgeous Rose with her fabulous ears, amber eyes and lush coat in multi hues of browns and golds is a knockout! Long-legged and elegant, she’s happy to make new friends and be out for a walk and a chance to go potty. We’re off to the park, Rose’s tail wagging as she looks up at every person we pass, wondering if this might be her new person. She has a gorgeous prance, like a high stepping Lipizzaner. Other dogs of all sizes are ignored as we chat about her favorite things. Toy? Yes please, and Rose gives quick chase and gets a mild case of the zoomies in the backyard. Joining me on the bench for some cuddle time, she kisses, and then poses for photos, making soft eye contact and waiting for a treat. She’s gentle, respectful, beautiful and soft. “Love planted a rose and the world turned soft and sweet”, is a quote attributed to Katherine Bates. I couldn’t agree more! Come fall in love with our Rose and the rest will follow.
05/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Rose A1111680 KNOWN HISTORY: None 05/11/17 Intact female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 05/14/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on the Assessor and all other stimuli available. Her body is soft, likely panting, likely to display high movement between attempts. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Rose DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 5/12: When off leash with another dog, Rose is uncomfortable with interaction and will move away from the other dog after a brief greeting. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 05/11/17 During her initial medical examination, Rose allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Rose so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Rose has been observed to bark and jump up at handlers seeking attention, takes a while to settle down, and the handler needed to move her head away using the leash to get her to settle due to the lack of success with simply ignoring Rose. A “Head-Halti” is recommended to help better manage this behavior. She has been provided high-value in-kennel enrichment items daily due to her high energy movements, and has exerted her energy to these items for a few moments. The anxious and fast movements Rose is exhibiting might be due to lack of mental & physical stimulation. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children: At the care center, Rose has displayed excessive jumping and hard mouthing on people when she becomes excited. For these reasons, we recommend an adult only home at this time. _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys. _X_Anxiety: Rose has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Rose, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
