08/10/2016 WEB MEMO
Life is game of chess. There is strategy to the thing and planning is key. What seems like the smallest, most insignificant action today can lead to tremendous failure or great success tomorrow. I would imagine 2 year-old Rook would excel at the game were there a doggy version made available. To be around Rook, in his stunning fawn coat and with his infectious, silly smile, is to feel as if you’re in the company of one who’s seen more of the world than most. Or more than any 2 year-old should. Rook is the easiest of walkers, cutely bouncing just a step ahead of me as we make our way to the park. The bouncing continues until we reach a spot of long, dark grass shielded from the sun by a winding tree. Rook tends to his business immediately, pauses, and then looks to me expectantly as if saying, “what’s next?” Next is a bench where Rook is content to sit at my feet, and looking into his eyes, cool and warm at once, and mesmerizing in all ways, is when I begin to learn more about him. As he stares at me I see wheels turning and thoughts colliding. Memories coming and future thoughts forming. Past experiences moving through him along with hopes for what’s to come. He is still as the cloudless sky save for his long tail going thump, thump, thump. But his beautiful mind is working. Plans are being made. Rook is happy, bouncy, and playful. But he is not simple. The smallest of actions, such as looking into those wondrous eyes, reveals so much more than you could ever imagine. And you leave your time with him feeling as if you’ve seen more of the world than most. A thinker, a dreamer, a pup wise beyond his years, an old soul in a young body, and the best of all worlds. Queen takes pawn, king takes queen, and Rook? Rook takes your heart. Rook is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
Ruggedly handsome Rook has been my main man from the start and having raved about him to other volunteers I simply must add my official two cents to his chorus of praises. So well-mannered, so eager to please, so completely chill (despite the drool!) and relaxed around things that spook our more highly strung pups, Rook is quite simply a Very Good Dog. He’s responsive on leash, he knows ‘sit’ and ‘shake paw’, takes treats gently and is a play-bowing superstar with other dogs in playgroup too. What more could you ask for in a pet? All this and he’s sporting a spotless behavior assessment almost as bright as his smile! If you’re active yet easy-going, affectionate but low-key and ready to take on the world at a leisurely stroll then Rook might just be the doggie soulmate you’ve been searching for…
08/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rook came into our center after a member of the public found him as a stray, behavior in the home is unknown. He was tense and stiff upon intake, but allowed all handling. On his relief walk he pulled a bit on leash. In the assessment room he appeared friendly and sociable. He held the assessor’s gaze during Look item with a wagging tail, ears back, and body neutral. He leaned into the assessor during Sensitivity with tail low, mouth open, and ears back. For Tag he was a bit playful, following with ears back and tail wagging. He did not pull his paw back for Squeeze on either attempt. He showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing it and then walking away. The Behavior Team recommends Rook go to an Average home. Rook would benefit from a slow approach and slow introduction. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, open mouth, ears back, and tail low. Tag: 1. Dog stands with his tail low and wagging, follows assessor, a bit playful. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs then turns away.
08/04/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Rook is social and displays soft body language when interacting with other dogs. He has showed interest in engaging in play. Rook has not yet been introducted to a male dog in our care. The behavior team feels Rook could go to a home with another social dog pending successful pre adoption interaction. 8/4: When off leash with other dogs, Rook greets with a soft, wiggly body and offers a few bows and bounces. He is a bit sexually motivated but not persistantly or overwhelmingly so. 8/9: Rook greets politely. He bows and barks to solicit play. He backs away when offered correction from dogs who are uncomfortable.
