09/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 9/14/17 Neutered, Owner surrender (purchased from a breeder at 10 weeks old) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: The owner stated he can be reactive to new people Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Yes, he will growl and snap if someone touches his treats or toys. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: The owner describes Ronin as friendly, affectionate and playful with a very high activity level. Other notes: Other notes: After placing Ronin into his kennel, his owner spoke with several staff members and explained the Ronin is undersocalized and is uncomfortable with strangers. He will growl, snap, lunge, and bark at strangers when they approach him. He stated that Ronin needs time to become comfortable with new people at his own pace. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/16/17 Summary: Ronin is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has not allowed any handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Ronin is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home. PLAYGROUP: Ronin has not been able to be handled for playgroup. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 9/14/17: Ronin was lying in the front of his kennel, not moving, when visited by two Behavior Team members. One offered Ronin a treat, and he immediately lunged forward and attempted to bite her fingers, and started to growl and bare teeth. He did not give any warning signals. After they backed away from his cage and toward the door of the room, Ronin became fixated on them and continued to low growl and track them even after they left the room completely. 9/17/17: Presently, Ronin continues to low growl, hackles raised, and will sometimes bare his teeth at anyone who approaches his cage, and refuses to move from his bed. He does not appear to be acclimating to the shelter environment well. Based upon his owner’s reports of undersocialization, we cannot be certain how much of this behavior is specific to the shelter environment and how much will continue into a future home now that he has been removed from the only environment he may have been comfortable in.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR 9/14/17: Ronin was brought into the shelter muzzled, and the owner scanned and leashed him to bring him to his kennel. When leashed, Ronin became tense, hackles raised, and head flipped toward the rope. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/14/17: During his medical examination, Ronin was too reactive and fractious to be fully examined. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_No dog parks: Ronin was not exposed to other dogs in his previous home, and we have not been able to check on his reaction to other dogs in the care center so we recommend no dog parks until his behavior around other dogs can be thoroughly evaluated. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Ronin has not allowed handling or approach in the care center. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: His owner reports that Ronin growls and snaps if items are taken from his mouth. We recommend that Ronin be left alone while eating to prevent rehearsal of the warning as well as to prevent escalation. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Ronin’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression _X_Kennel presence: See In-Shelter Observations for details. _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Ronin has not allowed handling in the care center
