07/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Romeo previously lived with 3 adults and has spent time with a toddler. The owner stated Romeo is friendly towards strangers and when around the toddler he is relaxed and likes to give licks. The owner mentioned Romeo is housetrained and has a medium activity level. The owner describes Romeo as lovable and affectionate. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Romeo is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. At intake it was reported Romeo was tense with his tail tucked, however, did tolerate all handling. During the medical exam Romeo strongly pulls against the rope, ears back, tail tucked, fearful and bares his teeth. In the kennel Romeo can be seen growling, baring his teeth, whale eyed with tense body language. Upon approaching Romeo’s kennel he was standing at the back with his head laying across the lifted edged. His tail was tucked and he would occasionally gaze towards handler but quickly shift his gaze back to the wall. Romeo will tolerate leashing and minimal handling, his body remains stiff and uncomfortable the entire time. On leash Romeo pulls hard, attempting to flee. Romeo startles easily throughout the shelter and his immediate response is to flee, though if something seems to pose an immediate threat, Romeo will react by growling and curling his lip to expose his teeth. Upon entering the SAFER room, Romeo walks with a low and tense body, displaying whale eyes and will attempt to increase his distance from the handler. For safety concerns and stress level, a SAFER was not conducted. The behavior department recommends placement with a New Hope Partner who can present a unique plan to help Romeo thrive and succeed in an experienced home. As an additional note, the behavior department cannot with much confidence predict how Romeo will acclimate to a new home environment as he has been shut down throughout his stay at the care center.
