07/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Goofy or sweet? Playful or cuddly? Brown or blue? Why choose when you don’t have to? And with Roman, you don’t! With one eye as blue as the sea and the other warm as the earth, 1 year-old Roman is literally the best of both worlds. Those eyes aren’t enough for you? How about the delightful speckles across his nose or that million-dollar smile that can light any room? I first meet Roman on an epicly warm day but this handsome lad wasn’t about to let a little heat ruin our fun. We walked briskly to the park stopping occasionally for sniffs and pets before eventually returning to “lap” up the comforts of the shelter’s doggy pool. After many splashes and one good, LONG shake, Roman was ready for the main event. Treats! Despite being a big, sturdy boy he sat for every snack and took them so gently from my hand I had to double check that they were gone. Considering his young age and relatively new surroundings, Roman is exceptionally calm and collected. As pups pass by our pen he regards them quietly with a tilt of the head before returning to my side. Handsome or cute? Curious or calm? With Roman or without? You need only choose once. And the choice is clear. Romanis waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
07/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roman came into the care center as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He has been social and easy to handle since intake, and is also quite high-energy. He pulled hard on the leash during his relief walk. He was social and interactive with the assessor, extremely exuberant and active in the SAFER room. He grabbed the leash during Tag but did not escalate. He did not engage with the toy. Off-leash with other dogs, Roman greets appropriately but engages in only brief play, and seems anxious. Roman is a young, very energetic, strong dog. He will likely need assistance with leash manners (we recommend a front-clip harness for walking him) and also with appropriate outlets for his energy. We recommend an experienced adopter prepared to give Roman daily mental and physical exercise and to provide guidance on appropriately interacting with his human caretakers. His energy level may be overwhelming for young children, so we recommend a thorough interaction with any potential young family members. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Licks assessor’s hand. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Roman briefly runs along playfully with he helper dog. He quickly loses interest and becomes anxious in the yard.
07/13/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
7/13: When off leash with other dogs, Roman briefly runs along playfully with he helper dog. He quickly loses interest and becomes anxious in the yard. 7/14: Roman greets briefly, however is more intent on seeking to exit the yard. 7/15 update: Roman engages in brief play with intent to mount. He is tolerant of a mouthy male but is tense throughout the interaction.
