(These behaviors appear to be consistent with on leash reactivity and may not accurately reflect Roger’s behaviors when off leash with dogs.) When off leash at the Care Center, Roger displays soft and social body language in a group of calm male and female dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Roger be placed with resident dogs that match his calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 06/26/17 During his initial medical examination, Roger tolerated all handling though appeared a bit cautious initially. ENERGY LEVEL: Roger displays a low energy level in the care centers.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all the noted concerns displayed in the home environment, the behavior department recommends Roger be placed with a New Hope rescue partner who can further assess his behavior in a stable adult-only home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Roger was observed to growl and snap when on his bed. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Roger’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Roger is reported to quickly escalate to snapping, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Roger needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Roger as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
