05/03/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey girl, you feeling stressed? Just stare into my eyes for a minute…wow, I feel better already. Rocky’s the name and if your idea of heaven is a guy with good looks, great manners and a heart as golden as these eyes then I’m thinking we might be a perfect match. Is that a treat in your other hand? I take my treats as seriously as my snuggles, and I’m looking for a family with plenty of both who’ll appreciate the special blend of soft-natured sweetness and high spirited energy I bring to the table. And the sofa. And the park. Wherever you are I’ll be right by your side, eager to please and ready to impress. Sure, I’m a humble guy but you should know that I know how to ‘come’, ‘sit’ and ‘shake paw’ like a pro, that I walk well in a harness and that I’m always happy to make time for new friends of any species. I may be neutered but I still know where to fetch the best balls, and I’m totally cool with sharing toys and my food, too. I promise, the only thing I’ll ever guard is this fire in my heart for you and yours. So why don’t we make it official? Take my paw, look deep into my eyes and make the best decision of your life. Let’s build our forever home…together.
Another volunteer writes: Hello humans! My name is Rocky, and I’m on the market for my Adrian. But I should probably get a few things out of the way before we go any further. Unlike the other Rocky, I’m not a boxer, and I don’t eat raw eggs. I do run up the stairs at a pretty good clip, but really I’m just a gentle giant. I love taking walks with my human friends, and I know “sit” and take treats very gently. Treats are the bomb, am I right? I would rather eat treats than raw eggs any day of the week! Bonus—I’m quite the looker. Maybe you’re into that sort of thing, maybe not. But I’ve been told I’m very handsome. But really the most important thing is that I’m a sweet boy, and I would like to be a furry companion. I hope you will consider helping me find my forever home!

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Rocky engages in bouncy play with other dogs in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Rocky and social or tolerant resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/30/17 During his initial medical exam, Rocky was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: Rocky’s previous owner described him as having a very high level of activity. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the statement by the previous owner that Rocky becomes too excitable around young children, we recommend a home without young children. Older children should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Rocky’s previous owner stated that he was very excited and too much for young children. He jumped up on the assessor during his assessment. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
