10/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ricky has one blue eye and the wiggle of a puppy! He was with his previous owner since he was just a babe and was sadly surrendered to us because they no longer had time to care for him. We’re told he is mellow, very affectionate and warms up very quickly to new people. He loved to follow his family around the house, and would solicit attention by waiting for them in bed (he’s one I’d definitely want to cuddle with!). His likes include strolling around the neighborhood, getting massages, and playing with balls. He has been SUPER sweet and charming whenever I’ve hung out with him. He is easy on leash, seems housebroken, and loves treats (he showed me that he knows “sit,” “paw,” and “down” — a star!). He hits himself in the face with his tail when I pet him, is adorable with plushy toys, and tries to have conversations with me after I put him back in his cage (his negotiating skills are top notch!). Please come meet Ricky at Brooklyn ACC, discover all the little things there are to love about him (like how the way his ears emerge from his head make him channel Gizmo from the Gremlins), and see if you might be his Lucy (or Fred)!
04/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited profile from foster home Neutered male (second stay in care center, in foster home for 5 months) Behavior towards strangers: Friendly Behavior towards children: Unknown Previously lived with: Adults, large dog, cat Behavior towards dogs: Friendly, playful with resident dog Behavior towards cats: Tolerant FG/RG: None reported Bite history: Yes; Ricky has bitten on two separate incidents on the same occasion. Several people over for dinner along with a separate dog who started to mount Ricky, upon removing dog off Ricky, Ricky lunged at the victim biting him in the chest then released and biting him in the thigh resulting in four puncture wounds. Later this same day, dog started to mount Ricky again and when separate victim went to pull of Ricky hard barked and jumped up at her biting her in the shoulder. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly affectionate, playful at times and mellow with a medium to low activity level Other notes: KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered Male, Owner surrender (first stay in care center) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Ricky has lived with teenagers; he is playful and solicits attention. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Mellow, affectionate and friendly. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/20/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy:1.Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Ricky displayed no concern during his behavior assessment.
PLAYGROUP: Ricky’s previous owner did not report any history with other dogs. When off leash at the Care Center, Ricky initially is nervous, ears back and tucked tail but initiates a greet with the female helper dog. After exploring the yard for a bit he loosens up a bit and wiggles while bouncing playfully with the other dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/16/16 During his initial medical examination, Ricky readily allowed all handling without issue. ENERGY LEVEL: Ricky is reported to have a medium to low energy level in the home environment, in line with what has been seen in the care centers. We recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as way to direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Ricky has remained social and attention seeking in the care center, allowing all handling and displaying no concern. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Ricky’s multiple bite history, the behavior department believe he is best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner who will allow for a period of decompression in addition to providing Ricky with an experienced adult-only home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended. _X_Multiple bite history/potential for future aggression: Ricky has a multiple-bite history and has escalated quickly to snapping and biting in highly charged and stressful situations, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Ricky may need behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Ricky as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
