Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper: 1069674 Rocky came to us as an owner surrender due to him attacking someone. Apparently, a tenant in the owner’s building was leaving for work when walking through the yard that Rocky was in and was walking in his direction. According to the owner Rocky proceeded to bite and latch onto the tenant’s left foot and did not let go until the owner was able to pry Rocky off of the tenant. When entering the facility as well an admissions counselor went with the owner to put a leash on Rocky. Rocky was tethered inside of the car but had loose and wiggly body language and seemed very aroused. Once out of the car Rocky was still very aroused with loose body language and would lunge toward the counselor. Due to the owner’s inability to handle Rocky, Rocky was able to lunge toward the counselor and began to bite their thigh. In attempt to ward Rocky off of them by pushing him off with their hand Rocky was able to bite the counselor’s hand without letting go. Rocky did also come to us with a previous bite history but those he did not draw blood from. According to the owner Rocky is reactive toward strangers, only gets along with people in his home and has never interacted with children. When people approach Rocky’s home he is recorded to bark and snap at them. Due to Rocky’s previous bite history the handling items of the SAFER were not conducted for safety reasons. Staff has been able to interact with Rocky where he has allowed all handling despite displaying behaviors with high anxiety. During most interactions it was recorded that Rocky would attempt to air snap at the leash when uncomfortable and would display some signs of frustration and at points tense body language. On one of the interactions it was observed that Rocky’s anxiety would increase with his surroundings or when loud noises were made around him. When engaging with a toy Rocky would have slightly tense body language. When on an on-leash dog interaction Rocky rushed in very quickly with stiff body language but did not escalate. Due to all known behavior information we recommend placement with a New Hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification for him. Toy: 2. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is a bit tense. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect.
