Rocko

Hello, my name is Rocko. My animal id is #17968. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 09-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won’t allow.

Rocko is at risk for behavioral reasons. Rocko is reported by his previous owner to be “very overprotective”. In the shelter, Rocko displays high levels of resource guarding behavior, and a tendency to snap. Medically, Rocko does have some symptoms which should be further investigated, including cataracts affecting both eyes and associated blindness, and possible diabetes.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

A volunteer writes: Rocko rested comfortably  on his bed, one paw over the other. His eyes were too highlights but they were blind…I knew I had to be gentle and draw him to me in confidence with my inner voice . Rocko got up slowly and stopped at his door. I softly asked him to sit, complimented him on how handsome he was and told him that I had treats in store for him. I do not think he understood a word  of what I said but he sensed I was a friend.  His tail was wagging and he sat, very obediently. Never did I hear a growl or saw his teeth. It must be so tough for him , not seeing anything while nothing smells or sounds like home… I fed him through the door. He missed sometimes but got good at it after a short while. I pet the tip of his nose with the back of my index finger. Rocko seemed all content..Rocko is with us  as his family moved to a place not allowing dogs . Not much information was left about him but it is obvious that he is a  special needs dog who needs a very special person(foster or adopter) to care for him as when one deals with such a challenge as blindness, life can be quite scary if it is not handled with utmost care and comforting routine. Many pets affected with blindness live long and happy lives with the right owner. Our Rocko needs you, your love, your expertise and patience  to spend comfortably the rest of his life and give back to his new masters. Rocko is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to potential for defensive aggression displayed at the care center, as well as potential resource guarding, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to potential for defensive aggression displayed at the care center, as well as potential resource guarding, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was observed at the care center as Rocko growled and snapped when the assess-a-hand touched the toy he was engaged with. This is in line with the previous owner’s report that Rocco growls when items are taken from him. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Rocko’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Rocko has snapped quickly when startled at the care center. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Rocko to new and unfamiliar situations.
