07/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: With a crimson coat and a smile a mile wide, sweet, 2 year-old RJ is fairly impossible to resist. I met RJ on a recent, steamy day and while initially he was very hesitant to leave his kennel, he quickly sensed that I was a friend and in no time at all we were off. RJ pulls slightly on leash but as a young, curious lad there are simply too many exciting sights to behold and RJ is not a dawdler. He does take his treats gently and while his “sit” is not quiiiite yet perfected, it’s getting there! And I have no doubt this young, eager grasshopper could learn every trick in the book under the right hand. RJ is a bright, happy boy and a lover of people. I quickly realize his most favorite activity seems to be smooshing his beautiful self right up against you and bestowing dozens of sloppy kisses. But in short order RJ spots something even more interesting than me (I’m hurt but will recover) – a squeaky toy. He bounds down from our bench and gleefully munches on Finding Nemo’s stuffed counterpart, full of bliss and happy as a clam (pun intended!). Watching RJ delight in the smallest of pleasures I forget the sweltering heat just as he seems to have forgotten his concrete surroundings. I join him on the warm pavement and rub his head while he plays. And for just that moment we are both young and without care with smiles on our hearts. And anything is possible. RJ is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
07/10/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
RJ came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was nervous upon intake but warmed up. RJ pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. He was hyperactive, jumping on handlers upon entering SAFER assessment room. RJ pulled out of assessor’s hands on all three Look attempts. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, ears back, tail wagging. RJ was distracted but unresponsive to the touch during Tag game. He pulled his paw back on first Squeezt attempt, did not pull back on second attempt. RJ playfully engaged with Toy, took it away when approached with a loose body. When off leash with other dogs RJ greets politely but is more interested in seeking attention from handlers. RJ interacts with a male and a female but is submissive throughout the interaction. He crouches down when sniffed but has a low wag. The Behavior Team feels RJ would do best with an Experienced adopter. He would benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus as well as not to jump up. RJ will require daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, play, as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs RJ greets politely but is more interested in seeking attention from handlers. RJ interacts with a male and a female but is submissive throughout the interaction. He crouches down when sniffed but has a low wag.
07/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
RJ has displayed interest in greeting, albeit cautous and at times displaying submissive behaviors. He is stil uncomfortable when solicited with exuberant play at this time. The behavior department feels that RJ should require a pre-adoption interaction, and may be more cmofortable around respectful, toelrant dogs. He arrived as a stray, so it is unknown how his behaviors will translate into a home. 7/8: When off leash with other dogs RJ greets politely but is more interested in seeking attention from handlers. 7/9 update: RJ interacts with a male and a female but is submissive throughout the interaction. He crouches down when sniffed but has a low wag. 7/12, 13: RJ is cautious and sniffs when dogs walk away. He begins to show brief interest, however corrects when the other dog is too exuberant. 7/14: RJ offers a few sniffs, then keeps to himself. 7/15 update: RJ will briefly greet the other dogs but is respectful when they give signs they need space.
